SLRs not selling, whats the deal?

We have had two SLRs at our dealership, it took us about a month and a half to sell the first one and now we have this other one that we have had for about two months now and still is not sold. Whats the deal, I thought these were the hot ticket to get? How come there are no buyers?

And then returning that and getting a regular 'super' car. Every sports car these days is a supercar.

No one wants to pay the dealer price that is $1,000,000 when the msrp on the car shows $450,000. <----- I think thats right. I really thought this was a hard car to get too. MBZ had auctions for the SLR and I heard that one bid went as high as $2,000,000. <----Heard this from a MBZ representative. A MBZ dealership near me has had the SLR for about 2 and half months (Los Angeles, USA). I bet in LA with all the other MBZ dealerships there are about 3 to 6 SLRs not sold yet. Now if you want this car braggin with all the dealers. When one dealer gives you a better price, show the other dealers and those dealers will then bring their price down. Do this over and over again, till you think that you can afford the car. I did this with Hummer when I was thinking of buying the H2, all the dealers were dropping the price and were offering me free things. I didn't buy the H2 (I am so happy that I didn't). People with H2 Hummers, I suggest you to get superchargers w/ intercoolers on those v-8s because you will get better gas milage.

IMHO, besides the half-mil$ markup, I think most people find the SLR not be what the original concept was. With extra 6'' at midsection, the car now lost it's proportions.

It also looks too much like an SL, and SL65 at $200,000 is it's performance equal.

Because you can buy a Ferrari, an SL65, and a house to park them both (in some places) and still have money left over to buy a beater S600 as your daiy driver.

Just think of the buyer's remorse one could have if the took their SLR in for service six months from now only to find one for MSRP. I'd be sick to my stomach.

I'll keep my SL600.

I think that they aren't selling because of several factors

The car is butt ugly

There are alot of cars that cost alot less that approach the performace levels

The SL55 with an ECU mod and an SL65 look better and will run with it in most situations

the SLRs are priced at around 1 million?!
no wonder they're not selling, especially when you can pick up a Carrera GT for about half of that.

The problem with the SLR is that it never really *sparked* it's just not special enough.

Coloboardin,

Why do you think your cars are not selling? How much is the car that you have. I spoke with Fletcher Jones in Newport and was told that they'd sell their car for $700k. That's still a Ferrari, an SL 65, and an S500 beater and you still have money left to fly the family from San Diego to New York 1st Class for dinner and shopping on 5th Avenue.

MORE RAMBLINGS:

I grew up poor and cold so there's a side of me that practical. I drew the line at $140k (well, errr. . .my wallet did) or so when we bought our '05 SL600. You can't convince me that an SLR (even for $700k) is worth five SL600s? SLRs are bad a$$ and I love the way they look, but I'd rather have a Ferrari (which I'd still have $ left over to maintain) and an SL600 than an SLR.

Being able to afford $1M on a $450,000 car doesn't make it smart to do it. The dealer steals enough from us at trade-in. Why get f***ked on the front with high mark-ups and from the rear at trade-in time?

I realize some people have $ to burn and can afford to do this, but time is always on the buyer's side. Remember the $20k markups on the Miata and $10 mark-ups on the PT Cruiser? Imgine the depreciation hit those people took. Then imagine yours if your buy a $450k car for $1M.

I'm done.

I'm not exactly sure how much we are selling this one for, I beleive we sold the other one for around $600k, they wanted 1 mill to begin, pssh! I mean our nearest compeditor is in California for selling SLRs. I'm not saying I'm disapointed or anything, i just think its weird how every SLR scheduled to arrive at our dealer was spoken for and now every buyer has backed out and there is no longer a waiting list. They just got a little too much sugar coating when they came out i guess.

So could it be these people backed out after they found out that your stealership wanted them to bend over and smile by practically doubling the price and then settling for a miesly 25+% markup above MSRP. Can't say that I blame the prospective buyers. Seems to me that those folks didn't make their money by throwing it away at stealerships. $0.02

Even still I'm pretty sure we are selling this one for a little over sticker if not sticker price... I'm just saying I think this car was sugar coated way to much and isn't all it was cracked out to be...

Sure it was. Limited edition cars like that always will be.

But does that justify it that the stealerships will sugarcoat it even more to the tune of a 25 - 100 % markup?

Maybe it's because the SLR comes only with an Audio 30 cassette?

Or, as another poster posted (at least 5 times on various areas here), it's because you can only get a V60 phone with it?

how much over msrp? NO WAY! don't get me wrong i absolutely believe

that the more exclusive a high-end exotic, the better. all the more tempting, all the more unreachable..the hotter. it's all part of the intrigue and fascination..but, i think a waiting list is more appropriate than treating it like a smithsonian auction item. it is hot but, NOT hugh hefner's first gullwing.\

Ok well an update, we sold our SLR today. Client paid around $495,000 for it. I thought this thing would never sell! Wonder how long the next one will take to sell...?

And about the V60 phone, that is rediculious! I remember having a V60 in 2002, that phone is so out of date! MB needs to make their integrated phone systems more compatable with different phones.

Let's see why:

$165,000 - Lamborgini Gallardo
$200,000 - SL65
$120,000 - S55
$175,000 - 996TT
$100,000 - Range Rover
$240,000 - Fun money
---------
$1,000,000
vs
1 SLR

No Contest.

The price is pitched too high.
I also think the car although it has hot looks, these looks aren't good from all angles.
The massive hood a result of trying to get the engine as far back as possible has given it an odd look from the side.
From the front IMO this is the most striking look a car has ever had.

a Few Nice cars.
Could it be that this is a "WEALTHY MAN" car and not your normal Corvette or Mustang GT price? not everyone has that kind of money to blow on a car,or even afford the payments.

I am just wondering why Americans don't buy these exotic cars from Canada? As far as I know it is illegal to sell a vehicle over the MSRP here in Canada!
