Steering wheel interchange compatabilty
Am wondering IF anyone knows for sure if a 2007 CLK 550 steering wheel (with paddle shifters) will fit a 2003 SL500 ? My main interest is whether the central splined steering shafts are interchangeable in "depth and diameter wise".
BTW, I am NOT interested in using the paddle shifters nor any electrical compatibilities just IF the wheel shaft/splines will fit ..
Any useful info appreciated,
rwm
Am currently in South Florida without either car...till this weekend ...I will check the VINs next week and get back to you - IF you are still willing to help out..
BTW ..are you in the Orlando area ?
Ron
Am back in Tampa and have the VINs
My 2003 SL VIN is WDBSK75F63F060311
The VIN of the CLK 550 possible donor is WDBTJ72J47F207344
Am not in a great hurry.. you seem to have the knowledge I seek ..
Please send a PM email to me and we can discuss the possibilities ..

Thanks, rwm
As you know my name is Ron Martin and I live in south Tampa and have owed various Mercedes for many years - but mostly W107s..
How about thinking over my request and then send a PM to me on my email address... ron.w.martin@earthlink.net with some info about you ..BTW what do you do in the "real world"?
Thanks,

We (I) may be wasting our time since I am trying to figure our how to acquire an old R230 steering wheel, cut the upper portion from the base- including the air bag and spokes with the various button accesses ... and strip it down to the female shaft (to accept the male shaft) and have a local precision machine shop fabricate my classic NARDi steering wheel onto the remaining base unit. Then locate a small electronic box with the necessary buttons to access the computer under the dash knee area to communicate with the computer.
I COMPLETELY realize I will loose the safety air bag and the phone and wheel access buttons .. having raced TDs, XK120, Lotus MK 11s, and
SIATA/Ferraris without air bags years ago ... I really could care less !
I just want to try and conceive a means of connectivity between the Nard and the computer IF it CAN BE DONE..
I hope I did not mislead you..
FYI thus far I have installed a compete P030 performance AMG package along with Black Series 19" wheels, and a Quaife LSD on a VERY low mileage (8300 miles) R230.. and intend to mount SW headers (with stripped exhaust) - no cats, (02 shims) and mid muffler.. with only a back axle TSP1 muffler along with a flashed ECU on my special SL ..
IF you think I am crazy ..I will understand....but seriously need some smarts in connecting the wheel to the computer IF it can be done..
Thanks for any help, IF you are still game !
(Never said it would be easy)
Ron
NOW..Are you willing to advise me with the electrical connectivity for the Nardi assembly to the OBD computer ? All I need is a second opinion on creating a small "button box" located adjacent to the wheel hub that will feed the system with computer inputs when needed.

Nevertheless I respect your wishes ..
HOWEVER .. can/ will you please steer me to some R230 wheel / steering electrical schematic in order that I may "press on" with my project.
Best wishes and stay in touch,

the 2007 clk550 wheel should bolt on fine
attached is the PDF for the SCM, clockspring, and airbag on the R230.
all of your steering wheel buttons should work if connected directly to pins 9,10 and 11 (data, ground, and power .. in that order) of the N80 module.
I have to agree with Plutoe that this car RELIES to a great extent on the correct wheel (with airbag) being installed (and functioning) in order to be safe to drive. ... Maybe if you installed a 5 or 6 point harness you might be OK with the Nardi wheel and no bag .... Maybe ... (I raced in NASCAR for 10 years, so I know what it is like to crash without an airbag ... but I would NEVER want it to happen while I was only wearing a lapbelt, only one shoulder restraint, and no helmet ... my 2 cents).
Cheers,
Chris
