Headlight Issue

I recently purchased a ’02 E55. The car is great and I am very pleased with my purchase. I will do a full intro with pictures once I am finished cleaning up odds and ends.

Over this past weekend, I lost a xenon headlight. I bought a bulb at the local MB dealer and had my indyshop put it in. This did not solve the problem. The tech told me that it may be a hid igniter, control unit or both. Tomorrow, I plan to test the working parts from my good headlight on my bad headlight. Is there anything I should know about these headlight configurations? It seems to be pretty straight forward plug and play.

Below is a picture of the bad headlight. It has melted.

Also, I am searching for an OEM and aftermarket parts supplier. Where do you guys buy parts from?
Thanks,
-B

To acess the ignitor you have to remove the bumper to remove the headlight. I would start by swaping ignitor and bulb. You might want to check the fuse before going through all the trouble.

Good luck!

I appreciate the fast responses.

To be honest, the bulb that I bought looked very similar to the bulb I pulled. The ignitor connection was also very clean.

I will find and check the fuse tonight and move on from there.

I found directions in this thread instructing how to pull the bumper off:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ight=headlight

Per Jimmydagreek:
Briefly, you must first remove the screws on the back side of the fenders in the wheel wells. Once your remove those you'll notice a bracket right above them, slide the bracket inward and remove it. Next, pop out the side marker lights and remove them, push the bulbs inside. Then, go underneath the front and unplug the foglights. After that, open the hood and remove the screws attaching the bumper to the headlights. Look in the middle in the front of the radiator, you will see a black plastic radiator guard, remove the tabs at the top and pull it up and out. This will give you access to the 2 screws on the inside behind the front of the bumper. Good luck on removing these screws but once they're out, the bumper will slide right off when you pull forward. Once off, you will see the screws to remove the headlight in plain sight. To re-attach, reverse everything above starting from the last thing I mentioned. What might be helpfull to prevent scratching upon re-installing would be to stick some blue painters tape along the bottom edges of the front part of the frenders where the corners of the back of the bumper attach. This will keep the corners of the bumper from scratching your fenders when you're trying to align it on installation. Good luck!

Shouldn’t there be an air bag sensor that has to be disconnected there too?
Thanks.

only thing you need to disconnect is the side maker lights, the fog lights and the outside temp sensor on the driver side, in the small grill next to the fog light.

The fuse is good.

I tried to get the bumper off, but I could not find the screws located on the inside, behind the bumper and under the radiator guard. I guess I will have a professional look at it, unless someone can instruct me to the location of the screws.

You don’t need to do that. I have an appointment at an indyshop tomorrow morning. I am disappointed that I did not wrench this myself, but if you want to post the photos at your leisure for future reference, that would be great.

Thanks.
