Tranmission Service Help

I'm about to have my trans serviced and wanted to verify that the E55 transmission just take regular Dexron synthetic ATF.
Also, should I just do it myself or have a trans shop do it? I understand you can obtain a trans dip stick (there I go again with dip sticks!) that will allow you to check the level yourself if you have a temperature tool.
Thanks!

Let the Dealer do it... after changing it out, you will notice how much more longer the car holds gear when you kickdown.

TBD
This is one that is pretty reasonable at the dealer. IIRC $200 for the service, including dropping the pan and wiping it down.

The dealer quoted me $350 for a filter change and flush. I used redline oil tranny fluid and did it myself. The MB fluid is $12+ per litre. Do not waste your money if a flush is not included.

I'm thinking that where I'm at it'd be even more expensive at the dealer.
I just wanted to know if regular ATF if fine and from your post I'm guessing it is.
I'm probably going to go with Valvoline synthetic ATF.
Thanks!

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
722.6

takes 722.6 mb spec fluid or the newer backwards compatible 722.9 fluid
not valvoline not redline ,just mb spec fluid.
You never flush a 722.6 you never use atf3 or 4.
since after sept 99 you do not have a torque converter drain you can cycle through the fluid by using the diy listed in the diy section on benzworld.org w210 section.
if you used redline and saved a whole $40 bucks changing 9 liters of fluid, what good does it do if you kill the transmission?Penny wise pound foolish.

once again you never flush a 722.6

Wow, I just saw so many folks using "regular" synthetic ATF that I thought it was a given that this was okay.
No biggie for me to use MB spec fluid.
Thanks!

After 50K miles or so the oil in our "sealed trannys" is shot and shifting quality starts to degrade, in fact it was horrible in my '02. After consulting several sources I elected to drop the pan change the filter and drain out the black stuff passing for oil. Apparently the contaminated oil cause deposits to build up in the valve body which degrades shifting quality. Redline recommended a specific product that I have used for years in many of my cars with great results. To flush, I repeatedly added and drained (vacuumed out) the oil until it looked like new (red). I used a dipstick tool and electronic temperature measuring device to ensure the oil level was correct. After a week or 2 shifting was back to normal. BTW MB fluid is now $15+ from my dealer. Many dealers are now recommending a flush for our cars. I just refuse to pay the dealer's ripoff prices for standard maintenance.
