2007 E550 - Same Motor, More HP?
I believe the E550 has the same 5.5l motor as the W210 E55. The torque number is listed as 391, but the hp is listed as about 380.
Where is the additional 40ish hp coming from?

I'm going to say same block, different heads. I think the 550 has variable valve timing. That would explain more power further in the rev band, and hence higher HP for the same torque. This is just a guess and trying to recall what I've read: I have no concrete knowledge on this, but maybe someone else does.

It comes with 4 cams, variable valve timming (Intake & exhaust), variable inake manifold & i can say: the power of this engine is AWESOME, this cars runs like our E55's & i need to be honnest are a little faster than our cars.. with the 7gtronic gear.. (have many many problems this gearbox's, but exalt the engine power very good)
Correction: 388 hp's are for the E500 W211 New series (M273) the E550 have a little more (close to 400 - 420 hp's i think)

4 valves per cylinder instead of 3 valves per cyl improves top end power. I wouldn't be surprised if they used slightly different cams more for top end instead of low end torque (or at least adjusted the variable cam timing to achieve the same results).
Honestly though you can easily get more power than that on your NA M113 V8 so its nothing to fret over. It does not take much at all to extract that kind of power, just a few simple bolt on mods.
BTW, here's a link to a lot of great pictures:

I think the same engine (M113) is in the SLK Black Series, which is a non-US car. That motor produces about 400 bhp.
The motor appears to be the same:
5439cc, SHOC, 3 Valve per Cyl and Aluminum Block.

What was done:
Engineers not only optimised the weight but also gave the Black Series an optimised AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with a maximum output of 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm of torque. A modified air intake, reduced-resistance AMG sports air filters, new high-performance headers and a new valve-timing scheme ensure a more efficient charge cycle and make the eight-cylinder unit even more responsive to accelerator pedal movements — which is also evident from the inimitable and even more impressive AMG V8 sound.

You cannot convert the heads themselves over, but you can make significant power out of the W210 E55 AMG engines. Performance headers, pulley, high flow 2nd cats, X-pipe, K&N filters & software will get you well into the 400s for a relatively low price. Contact us for more info

It is lighter, W210 E55 is relatively lightweight at only 3750lbs. The W208 CLK55 is runs like a monster b/c it has roughly same power yet only 3450 lb weight (roughly).

Pops has a '97 e550 and I drive it often. The car has great power but a much different feel than our cars. Whereas our cars are noticeable when you hit the power band, Pops is smoother like an 747 takeoff. This could, in part or all, be due to that great 7 speed tranny. Overall, I wouldn't say one car is significantly faster than the other but for sport driving I'd rather be in the e55 and for cruising fast & smooth, the e550.
