W210 E-55 Fuel mileage?

I rather doubt most of us put this at the top of our likes for our cars, but I am really pleased with the fuel mileage I am getting from my 01 E-55. Overall, in over 8,000 miles my computer says average consumption of 20.7 (combined city/hwy).

On a recent 3 day trip, I drove about 700 miles, about 90% was highway, and got 24.5 on the first day, and on the last day 25.6, with average speed of 67mph (included long stretches of 85-90).

Either you never exceed 2000 RPM (impossible with such a wonderful engine) or your computer is lying to you! My '99 E55 combined city/highway MPG never exceeds 17 and my best tank on a road trip has barely reached 20. Granted, I do use most of the engine's RPM range at every stop light or on ramp but even trying my fuel efficent best, I could never come close the the EPA numbers on any car I have ever owned.

BTW, my '00 CLK430 ragtop barely gets 15 MPG in combined driving. Road trips come in at about 18 MPG.

mac2001,

those numbers are impressive... I too have an 2001 W210 AMG, now with 18K miles and have always averaged ~16 mpg, per the trip computer. I probably have 60% highway/40% city miles.

I have a round trip commute of 160 miles daily, I'm seeing 23 to 25 mpg per tank full, I drive from Sonoma to the East Bay a mixture of crowded 65mph traffic to stop start when I'm close to the city (SFO). However I'm on it every second I get with bursts up to 80 to 100mph where conditions allow (I have tickets to prove it). So I'm well pleased with my gas consumption which is more than I can say for the cost of gas in the SFO bay area, saw $2.89 for premium in Marin this week!!!

Haven't considered the computer is wrong. Yesterday, I went to fill up the tank - it had 453 miles since the last fill up, with still about 1.4 gallons remaining. I guess I am not really airing it out like I should, but the point was only that this is a powerful, and efficient motor.

R.B. Man I feel for you folks in the bay area - what is up with the prices there? A few years back I remember one San Francisco gas station owner himself protested the prices and significantly dropped his prices for a short while - do I have that right?

MB must have done something to the 2000 and newer E55 because I can't even come close to those numbers. I do know that my 1999 was stuck with the Gas Guzzler Tax and the newer cars aren't. I wonder what the new W211 is getting.

Mac, yes you have the story right, SFO is highest gas in the nation, premium $2.59 to $2.89 is where it's at right now, but we have had $2.00 premium for about a year now.

I don't know how this happened, but the U.S. Gaz Guzzler Tax was only the 1999 & 2000 E55's. The 2001 and 2002 did not have the GGT?

Each time I measure my gas mileage I only average 14/15 MPG. Every time I 'fill up' I reset the trip odometer and when I top off the tank I get my numbers to compare the MPG.

W211 E55 owners will be lucky to get 10 or 11 MPG - that supercharger needs a lot of gas. Any one remember the problem with the gas mileage on the first lot of SL55's? This was printed in March 2002 issue of European Car:

"Meanwhile, the supercharged SL55 AMG scheduled for a spring 2002 launch has run into fuel-consumption problems and may be put back as far as the end of 2002. Cars have reportedly been using as much as 35 liters/100km in testing, effectively doubling the claimed fuel-consumption figures. Where the C32's V6 uses one crankshaft-driven belt to drive the blower and engine ancillaries, the bigger unit has so much more drag it needs a dedicated belt. The larger blower is said to take 80- to 90 bhp from the engine at peak revs."

It sounds like you DRIVE your 55 like I do! I've always been taught that "drive" was an ACTION verb! Still 15 MPG is not that bad considering what these cars can do. If the W211 can match it, I'll be extremely happy. I doubt that MB could sell that many AMG V8K cars if the mileage was too much lower.

I've gotten over 21 mpg, read this

I usually get about 17 mpg in the city. I bet if I could stay off the gas I could see 24 mpg, but that is impossible for me

I reckon I'm getting 22-23 mpg. Does the 1998 E55 have a trip computer? I don't think it does. Guess it came in with the face-lifted models in 2000?

Yup, that's pretty much what I get on stretches like that. And mine is a 2000.

my 01 E55 gets 24-26MPG on the highway. one time i set my cruise at 60mph and AC off for *****sngiggles, i got 26.9MPG! but if i do 100% city driving though MPG drops and I get 16-17MPG tops.

my car loves highway runs, but doesn't like city driving much. thank god for MI highways, i can go 80-90 all day.

OBC MPG calculator seems a bit strange though, it always starts out really low and very slowly goes up.

btw what are u reviving a 4 year old thread for... ?

Threadstarter, are you going by trip computer numbers or your own scientifically calculated numbers?

Dont trust the trip computer. Over a year of ownership in all sorts of driving conditions, I find the trip computer to be over optimistic by atleast 2 mpg on the highway and a good 2-3 mpg in the cities.

I get about 13-15 in city duty. About 22 on highways doing 80-100. I have gotten as high as 27 on the highway doing 65.

Well, unfortunatley they don't have this for GB. But you can go to gasbuddy.com just to enter in the fuel receipts. Usually people go there to check gas prices over here in the states. What you can do is pick a state, and make a quick account. Nothing much...just name things like that...you just need it for the fuel logbook. Once you login click on the fuel logbook link at the top of the page. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks xlr8tin for the clarification. I did a quick google & came up with this superb free fuel consumption calculator software download:

http://www.freeware.org.uk/calc.htm

There's also a useful converter piece of software there too.

I reset every fill up and steadily get in the 15's for city and 22's on road trips. 95k on the car. I thought I was doing poorly until I looked at the original sticker and it said 16/23. I was pleasantly surprised.

19.3 mpg avg the past 4k miles...split 1/2 city and 1/2 hwy.
considering we were getting about 20mpg for our previous 6 cylinder E320 wagon, i'm quite pleased w/ the 19mpg.

w/ the right mods you can get mid 30's for MPG on the freeway. It does require the right mods but its entirely possible. you can get low to mid 20's in the city and low to mid 30's on the highway. in stock form though, they aren't very good on gas I agree

Hey everyone, I was just thinking. You guys know those parts that you put into your air intake called the tornado? You can get them at local parts store and auto zone. Well, does anyone know how well these things would work in our cars? Has anyone done this or even heard of this part? Lemme know.

KING 5 Seattle did a comprehensive report on the tornado, the result.

Just as everyone suspected.......Snake Oil!
