Toying with putting my '01 E55 up for sale locally (Louisville) to buy a 911...

- Black with silver/black two tone
- 88K
- Heated/Air Conditioned seats (pretty rare iirc)

Good:
- All fluids have been changed, including AT fluid w/ pan drop and wipe down
- Full synthetic change every 5k
- Not a daily driver, typically get it out 1-2 times a week, no snow
- Garaged
- Tires (Sumo hrzIII) have less than 1k on them
- Runs great, no drivetrain issues whatsoever in the 3 years I've owned
- Body in good but not mint shape (typical dings that an '01 would have)

Not as good:
- Outer dial pixels are out (aren't they all)
- Rear sunshade has been broken since before I bought it, frankly didn't find a need to replace it
- Only paintwork I know of is on front right quarter panel, I put a small dent in it in a garage mishap, had a trusted local bodyshop repair
- CD changer comes and goes...the "corn pad and electrical tape trick" worked great, I just need to do it again.

Bottom line, I love the car. Best color combo going IMO. Love the vented seats, they are a God-send in the summer. 90% set on keeping it, but there is one particular 911 I have had my eye on for a while. Kinda miss the left foot action. I wanted to get your opinions as fellow W210 AMG'ers and most of you willl sell someday or have sold recently.

So...if you are bored, ballpark me what you would ask and/or a price you think it would go for (if different...ie ask $50K but take $47K...using fake numbers not to taint the process with my own opinion of course).

Thanks guys...

Six months ago, I was in your shoes. I have a 00 E55 with 70K on the clock. A 10 mechanically, and a 9 cosmetically. I had my eye on a low mileage (43K) 996 MK1 Carrera: Black on black, Sport Package, Aero Kit, factory lowered (M030 suspension), tinted windows, and 19 inch black aftermarket rims. Trade in value on my E55 was 10K - 12K max. I suspect yours will be in the same ball park. My E55 was worth more to me than trade in. In fact, I could not place a monetary value on my silver rocket. I think I am in love with my 3,600 lb baby. And, for the first time in my vehicle purchasing history, I did not trade the current vehicle. I now own both. No regrets. They are best described as two very different animals. One rides smooth as silk, and the other can be only described with one word: Raw. Bottom line: Keep the E55, and treat yourself a Porsche. There is no substitute.

Thanks...

Mslaughter that was about what I was thinking.

ruBENZ, love the idea but I am "garaginally challenged". Have a 2 car garage for the E55 and my wife's suv, have my work vehicle in the driveway so basically out of room. Next house (someday) will have 3 or 4 if I can swing it.

Happy with your 996? Do you worry about the IMS or RMS problems and/or has yours had any major engine work done? That is my concern about switching...the E55 drivetrain is in fact bulletproof, no one says that about the 996 mk1's at all. I feel like I would be getting into a 996 before I can truly afford it (not the purchase price but the upkeep). I am 30 with a one year old and hopefully more kids on the way in the next few, I really don't want to hear the words "engine" and "rebuild" in the same sentence right now.

On the flipside, I am young and there will always be PCars out there...

Just to give you some perspective, this was my '00 from last year https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-...-argos-bt.html I ultimately sold it for $12k but it took me about 2 months and a lot of tire kickers to do it. I will be listing my '01 for sale soon and I'll probably ask $11 for it.

Hey Rex

I am on the other side of the market. I am looking to buy and have the cash to do so. I have looked at a few for sale here in SoCal. The one I like the best is a 2000 E55 93K miles silver/black w all records and 2 keys. Owner will not budge below 13K for the last 2 months. I feel 11.5K would make the deal happen. The owner has has strong emotional ties to the car having owned since 04. We will see.

Pulled a perfect PPI with no IMS or RMS issues. The RMS issue can be found in only a small percentage of 996 MK1s. Obviously, this small percentage makes up a large percentage of the posts on the forums. This blows the RMS issue out of proportion. Nonetheless, I intend to proactively address the potential RMS issue when the P-car has 60K on the clock. 60K is the average life span of a P-car clutch. And, the perfect opportunity to replace the RMS with a redesigned LN unit. Speaking of upkeep: The 60K upkeep will run me nearly $3K. Got's to pay if you want to play. And, worth every penny for the P-car experience.

What's up with W210 E55 owners adding 911 to their stables?

I'm also in the same situation but I've been looking at an older 1996 911C4S
with very low miles for its age. The owner won't go below asking price
even with a certified check on my hand (not full amount though). Told them
to come to the bank with me and we'll settle the rest there but no deal.
But I'm determined.

Tell us how yours pan out. Would love to hear it.

The E55 and 911 are the perfect compliment to each other.

E55 - Fast, quiet and comfortable and did I say fast

911 - Fast, not so quiet and race car handling

With prices so reasonable on these cars, why not buy one of each and get the opportunity to choose your weapon for the day

I don't really consider mid to high 40k reasonable price on a 15 year old sports car (911). But it's a legend so i'm still hunting for it before my CFO changes her mind. I'm keeping my E55 nonetheless.

To the OP: I apologize for getting your thread off track.

No need for apologies, I love the E55/Pcar talk. As mentioned, they are great compliments to each other. FWIW, the 993's are my favorite but have held their value so much they are tough to find a deal on. Not to mention, where did you come across a C4S 993? Can't be too many of those running around out there.

FWIW, spoke with the dealer today and the car had in fact sold. Kinda bummed...was a 2000 Millennium Edition totally optioned out, AWD, Alcantara, nav, etc...

Will probably get serious about moving the E55 in the next few months in order to be better prepared if a deal comes around....

.....but on the other hand I love my car.

You could sell it for 13k if you take it and have detailed, have a pro take photos of it and leave it in the garage from here on out (aka next few months of waiting). Want it gone with in the month? Try $9,999.99

Put it on ebay with a 14k reserve and see what kind of bids you get, if someone buys it above 14k, you're happy, if not you get some idea of what the market will bear!

The market might
bear 10K you will be a long time trying 14k(i.e. 4ever) and all you will end up doing is slowly dropping it to market and the people with the cash will keep track of the drop and really take advantage of the drop.
It needs work,it has had body damage.14K can buy so much more

Fair points to mention. I am not going to try the EBAY route and I agree that 14K is not doable. A mint vehicle may get that, but I am not representing as such. It is in very good condition though and would make a great weekend or daily driver for someone.

As far as "needs work" and "body damage"...the pixels out are only on the lower right gauge and the sunshade were like that that when I bought it and I was not bothered by the lack of either. The body damage was small and the result of a 5mph garage tap (done by me unfortunately)...true, it is paintwork, but it was not related to any sort of serious accident. Pic:

Anyways, I do appreciate all the feedback...pretty torn about what to do, maybe sleeping on it a month or two will do some good.

you can get that dent mostly removed by paintless dent removal.

I'm sorry if i wasn't clear, the dent occurred 2 years ago and was fixed promptly by a reputable local body shop who did a great job. That pic is from back then just to illustrate that it was not in fact major body damage...
