Tires question

Guys,
Its about time to change my tires, i have stock rims on the car, can it fit 255/35/18 in the front and 285/35/18 in the rear ? I am trying to put the widest tires. Anybody use this size ?
Thanx

Charly , it all depends on the offsets of the wheels ... I changed so many wheels and rims I cant even keep track .. but for quite a while I have been running on 255-35-19 and 285-30-19 ... before I put in the Brembos front and back , I had no rubbing and my car is dropped .. I had to put spacers upfront after the brembo to clear the calipers ... every now and then I get some rubbing but thats only because of the spacers , I am also running on very aggressive wheel offsets ( Kinesis rims ) .. on my next change which might be shortly .. I probably would go 245 and 275 or 285 just to be safe. sorry about the rambling.. it can be done but it is pushing it .. if you dont want to play too much with spacers and so forth , stick to stock size..the rear OEM wheels are only 9 inches rear, so , 1- you might want to check if a 285 tire will work on a 9" wide rim, and if it does, my guess is that you " might "have some rubbing on the inside side of the tire, against the trunk I mean .
Sorry I wish I had a more definitive answer !

I think sticky rubber is better than wider (if talking 10mm). The Hankook V12 is getting good reviews. Also Vredestein.

Charly , you might want to check .. the OEM wheel front is 8" wide , I think you need 8.5" rim for a 255 at least check what the tire spec shows as a min rim width.

I am going with Hankook V12 and pretty sure now will fit 255 front and 285 rear. I think original came with 245 and 275 from factory.

Yep! I'm running the OEM aero II , i chose the 30 profile for the rears cause the 35 seems to me a little higher in the re050a pole model, but maybe the brands of the tires change a little the messuremenst i chose 35 for front and 30 for rears and runs perfect!

I had the same thought. The optimum section width for an 8" rim is 245. And, the minimum safe section width for a 255 is 8.5" rim. That is not to say a 255 will not mount on a 8" rim. I have seen 275 on an 8" rim. Going wider then the recommended specs generally adds more pressure to the sidewall of the tire... especially in a winding road situation. Thus, it can be deemed unsafe. In all fairness, other factors to consider would be choice of tire brand given that some do lay differently. Just my two cents, and to each his own.

There is practically NO difference between a 275 and 285. These size tires are w i d e. You will find a bigger difference in the actual tires sizes from the manufacturer's specs. For example, the Yokos I bought were .5" wider than the contending Kumhos in the same size. Also what I also look for is the "squareness" of the cross section of the tire. This is how sharp of an angle the sidewall makes with the tread surface. I like squarer. Much of this info can be found on TireRack.com.
