ESP Hiccup...Safety Issue?

Arrr...'99 E55 near perfect 75K miles...On a hard left or right turn the ESP cuts out...yellow triangle goes on, car brakes and veers left...all for a split second. Because of this I've been hesitant to crank any hard turns.

Any thoughts? The car scares me to the point I sometimes wake up in a cold sweat.

the only time that happens to me is on wet roads or when I am taking a corner to quickly. I suggest that try try the same cornering in the opposite direction and if it reacts the same then you know it is the threshold point being reached not a malfunction.

You may have done this already... I hope it helps

Errr...what you're saying appears to be the consensus. Yes, it happens on both hard left and right turns. This is somewhat disappointing as I think the car has exceptional handling. To cut it short approaching an extreme situation rather compromises it's billing as an exceptional vehicle.

You drive these cars in Manhattan? We moved back from UES to L.A. after 2 years and hadn't touched our car for even longer.

From what you describe it sounds normal.

With ESP on, these cars will act weird when pushed through a corner.

Try with it being off?

Just unplug the battery for 10 sec. and to initialize turn the steeringwheel from complete left to complete right. But i dont think this is the issue.

still thinking of wrong tires or steering wheel not mounted on the middle position...

This happened once to me. Right after I mounted New 275/35/18's with 235/40 18 in front. That is the european front tire size. But after A little driving it went away, that or resetting as mentioned above.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm collecting everyone's comments and will have my mechanic investigate when I again take the car in for service.

I don't see factory spec tires making a difference unless they are worn or have a different flex than factory set up?

Thanks kaype...

Do you mean to say:
- Disconnect the battery;
- Wait 10 seconds;
- Reconnect the battery then turn the wheel?

Yea the cars are very sensitive. Basically there is a staggered tire ratio already programmed into the ESP system for our stock tire size. But in my case I had the euro tire size upfront. It drove fine until I went around the first corner. ESP thought the car was sliding. After more driving or a reset it was fine. Can't remember as it was a while back.

When you disconnect the battery and then re-connect it, you will have 3 lights ESP Brake assist and something else. Turn the wheel right to end then left to end and they should turn off.

yes, exactly, but i dont think this will bring any solution to your problem. check tires and the center position of your steering wheel ... therefor the airbag and the screw needs to be removed.

You should have these tires:
front: 235/40/18"
rear: 265/35/18"

greetings, Fabian
