Question 1999-2001 E55 AMG Questions for all owners.

Hi,
I am new to the forum, and just thinking of getting used E55 AMG.
I would like to know if there are any know problem with that model, and what should I look more carefully.
I am sorry if that had been asked before.

Thanks

I have a 2000 E55 and to me its an awesome vehicle with no faults on it, i know it doesnt have a supercharder like the new ones but it stills draws attention.

A very common problem is a bad MAF (Mass AirFlow sensor). Almost every E55 has their MAF replaced. Some cars with bad MAF run very bad, but on some cars the car just feels a little bit slower than normal and you almost doesnt think about it.

I have a 2001 E55 with 62k miles and it's been very reliable. It's been a great car especially considering you can find a nice used one for less than half what they cost new.

Like all other 210's, fuel tank sending unit, window regulators, dash cracks (not too common thank God), and last but worst, RUST!

Crazy, there are major differences in styling, features and options between the 1999 E55 and the 2000+ models. Opt for the 2000+ models if possible. They have:

upgraded exterior facelift
Nav option
steering wheel controls
shiftable tranny

The 1999 models only come in Black, Obsidian Black, Metallic Silver and White. None of the 1999 models have the Multi-Contour Seat which is standard on the 2000+ models. Good Luck!

I love my '01... no complaints. 2 Options I thought I'd never pay up for, but now would not live without: NAV unit and integrated phone. good luck.

How do you know whether you have a bad MAF? Like you said... bad MAF could cause noticeable performance issue.... but sometimes you just felt a little different in performance. So how could you tell? Just want to make sure mine doesn't have bad MAF.

BTW, mine had a bad cluster (LCD for outside temp, gear and clock was screwed up) and the headrest motor also went bad.... other than that is perfect, except one little rattle at rear right where I could not find where it came from.... not noticeable or big deal if you don't have sensitive ears

Real Cars
Your car will run like utter garbage with a bad MAF. Trust me, you will know. If a MAF goes bad, it goes REALLY bad 99% of the time.

Had an '02 E55 for about a year and 13k miles. I absolutely loved the car, still miss it sometimes. It was a bit slow for me, but overall very sound, easy to drive, and just a real quality vehicle. IMO, a superior daily driver than the E39 M5 which I also was considering at the time. Had a couple little problems here and there but overall I was very happy with the car.

Have had 3....

Avoid the 99 if you can. 00 is better, 01/02 is way better. Also, as Kev said above, major improvements aesthetically and functionally. You might find an 01 or 02 with some warranty left. I had a bad MAF sensor in my 2000, was a nightmare until it was properly diagnosed. You couldn't apply any throttle at all without it just totally boggin down. But once it was fixed, was a whole nuther car.
Good fun, very comfortable and great AC too. Not a lot of street cred though, cause lots of folks don't know what it is.
Hope this helps.

Oh one thing forgot to mention..... the BOSE sound system totally SUCKS!!!! I just couldn't believe that MB put such a POS sound system in a car this caliber.

BOSE in my Maxima is 300% better.... better bass, better treble, better sound...

Hmmm..... what's the difference between 00 and 01/02? I could only see the difference is the shift knob.... and also when I bought the car, the dealer claimed no difference between 00 and 01/02.

Not much difference. The 2000 does not use the V60 phone I believe and either 2001 or 2002 has full open sunroof with one touch of the button.

Yes, my '02 does have the one touch sunroof feature and the V60 phone. Other than that, no differences that I know of.
