2005 Kleemann k3
I am new to this board. I just purchased a 2005 e55amg, shipped it to Corey w/Kleemann and did a stage 3 upgrade. I did not know about the break in period you're supposed to do. I shipped it with only 200 miles on it and Corey just informed me that the baseline dino read only 444 hp and the stage 3 read 547 hp. He said the hp will go up between 600-610hp with about 2000 miles on it. For all you experienced users, Did I make a mistake in doing mods that early? I spoke to my mb dealership about the break in period and he said not to worry. It is only for earlier models. The 2005 is refined and as long as you stay out of the red zone you should be fine. Should I see 600hp in the future? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Now, with larger throttle position angles (aggressive driving) the effective compression ratio is higher therefore the piston rings are being forced against the cylinder walls harder when the cylinder wall hone is most aggressive (new motor). So, the lapping of the rings into a tight harmonious seal with the cylinder wall is more effective during the first 1000 miles a motor is run. Now this does not mean you can just go out and flat foot it for a five minute ***** to the walls run, what it does mean is you can run the motor hard for bursts of 20 to 30 sec. at a time and then let it cool down and then do it again. After all, the motor is in a relatively high state of friction and does produce more heat than it will after it is broken-in.
Also, the other thing that happens when breaking in a motor is the production of metal oxide from the lapping-in process of the rings, and this metal oxide is carried thru the motor by the oil, although, suspended in the oil, I personally feel a couple of oil changes during this break-in period and a third one at the end of the break-in period will keep this suspended metal oxide at a lower level and reduce the possibility of adverse wear on any of the bearing surfaces. I know, synthetic motor oils don't suspend the metal oxides as well as "Dina sore" oil, but the oxide still has to settle out to the bottom on the oil pan and that takes time and during that time they are suspended in the oil and being pumped thru the motor.
So, having said all this enjoy your new E55 and exercise it hard in sort bursts, cool it down and go for it again, and you will have a stronger running motor because of the better seal at the piston ring to cylinder wall interface. Good Luck!

This sounds like the same method as Marcus Frost's friend, Lance Wolrab. One question though is how long do you "cool it down" for? Does one pull over and wait an hour? Or slow down to let's say 60 mph or so and then burst it again for another 30 seconds or so?
Please explain the cool down method.

They have a pressure test that's been validated to show any low performing engines and those are pulled and fixed. No running time at all.

I am actually a bit disappointed that the car in question is only putting down 444hp from the factory, even before breaking it in.
