Road and Track Audi RS6 VS E55 Grudge Match...will they ever learn!!

The Audi RS 6 is fast, but the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG is even faster. It is really unfair to invite the Audi to match up against the Mercedes. Armed with a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, cranking out an impressive 469 bhp at 6100 rpm, and producing a whopping 516 lb.-ft. of torque between 2650 and 4500 rpm, the Merc is a luxury rocket ship. Based on our previous road test, the E55 AMG can almost keep up with the Dodge Viper SRT-10, and for sure can outrun a Corvette Z06 without breaking a sweat.
I am the biggest supporter of the Beast......but outrun a Z06??? Huh.

Those were 2003 models in that test so I am sure they were talking about the Z06 in production at the time. When was that published?

Had to have been in 03'...but I thought even the 03 Z06 was a killer....if not, when did it become God of Hellfire?

I live in fear of them on the street.

I really don't fear the C5Z, it takes a lot better driver to beat an E55 that basically drives itself. Same with my Viper, I could easily hang with myself if it was me (in the E55) vs. me (in the Viper) because the Viper is a much harder car to drive.

I am going to put this to the test very soon. My best time was a 12.2@118 in the Viper (on street tires). I'm gonna see what I can do w/ the E55 on street tires.

c5 z06's were only 400hp, but lighter, new c5 has standard 400hp and c6 z06 has 505 and is much lighter and gets to 60+mph in 1st gear.

IMO we can hold our own against the old Z06's (C5) but the new one is another story. Based on tests the numbers are relatively close (old one).

I can confirm that we can hold our own against the C5Z. I owned one. I've been to the track during the Corvette Challenge events and know what they run. From a dig, stock for stock, the E55 should win, even if the guy driving the Z is a really good driver. From a roll, it would be closer. Despite the weight of our cars, the E55 gets out of the hole in a hurry and that low end grunt throws them down the track. It is a big advantage.

I miss my Z. But my timeslips speak for themselves. The E is a low 12 second (12.07, 12.09, 12.15) 115 - 117 mph car. The Z, with the exception of a very strong car and great driver, is a mid to high 12 second, 114 - 115 mph car. There are some great Z drivers out there that can run low 12's bone stock. I give them tons of credit for it. Not easy.

And I am always suspicious of magazine tests on American muscle cars. Too many stories of special "ringer" cars being provided to the magazines that are not representative of the cars you will likely buy. Case in point, it was revealed that the stock C6 has a torque-management system from the factory that either pulls tons of timing or cuts spark on an upshift to preserve the transmission. That cuts your accelleration tremendously. The car(s) provided to the various magazine had that protection deactivated. It no doubt provided for faster and quicker acceleration runs.

It is a feature that we have as well. That's why it takes forever to upshift at full throttle.

Not bashing the Z at all. I had lots of fun with it, and the resources on the internet, and variety of relatively inexpensive go-fast parts, are something to envy. I may own one again some day. I just wanted to pass along my real world experience.

Hey, all I keep hearing is how these things should be worshipped. Post after post confirms.....where the heck is Vetluver....he can settle this....

I am not going to tuck tail on any car and would give it the ole College try, BUT as GTA said in the C6 post

The new ZO6 has a full 1000lb weight advantage over a w211 . . . Simple math tells us that a e55 needs to make nearly 670hp to equal the hp/weight ratio of the ZO6 . . .

Thought you were talking about the C5. The new C6 Z06 will definitely kick some a$$.
However, delivery on these cars won't begin until fall of this year.

Well looks like I have egg on my face again....Z06 2006 ran 11.7 on Drag Times...guess it wouldn't be the humiliation I thought it would be....go figure.

Even the Nitrous ones are running mid 11's....as did DWTBoss with Juice on the our Beast's.

I feel liberated from the crushing fear of Z06's...thanks guys.

This forum is good therapy....it's like tough love.

GM just realeased the specs but delivery is still months away.

People are talking about peak power to weight ratios and such but they are forgetting power delivery and traction. The E has more power "under the curve" meaning that it produces more power at lower RPM. Plot out the ratios at all RPMs and you will find a different story. Also, the added bulk of the E aids in delivering all that power. Put drag slicks on them and the weight differences now favor the Vette.

I don't doubt that the new 427 Z06 will be fast but it still has to be shifted. They don't have an automatic. Most of the guys that drag their Vettes have automatics. Takes the inconsistancy out the runs. I got a feeling that inspite of the differences in HP/weight ratios the E55 will still be able to contend with the Z.

My friend that has the Porsche 911TT X50 was so ticked off when I smoked him 3 times that he called Porsche USA to complain. They asked him how often he drove his car and whether he was a pro. When he said that he drove it 2 or 3 days a week and that he was not a pro driver, they told him that he probably would never beat a E55 in a straight drag.

There is one very important detail most people forget about when discussing performance, who is driving. A better driver in a slower car will win most of the time unless you are driving an E55. It doesn't take much talent to point and punch it.

Nothing new. My '66 Vette does 0-62 in first. Second only good for 85 and third for 110. Tops out at 135 at redline in fourth. Thanks God because the car turns into an airplane at high speed!

It depends on your point of reference. My 13 year-old streetbike is geared for about 72mph in first.
Some of the current large-bores are geared for about 100 in first.
Speaking of large bore streetbikes, I wish the R & T folks would invite another one for the next 0 to whatever and back to zero comparison.

I am at the track all the time and many Z06 have raced while I watched. Based on what I have seen they averaged 12.6 stock. When my E55 was stock I ran 12.3 12.4 average times. By the way, with all the mods now, my best time was 11.7 and consistently run under 11.9. This weekend I took my friend three times in his 1996 Viper with modified exhaust.

I know what you mean. I would say 12.6 is average. I've seen many hover in the 12.9's and 13.0's. I just couldn't get my Z to move that well. Really hard to get out of the hole. I think I pulled a 2.0 once. But my biggest concern/letdown was my trap speeds - I was always in the 113's. And I had headers and other mods on that car. I may not be the best driver in the world, but I never miss a shift. Maybe the car needed some more tuning. I don't know.

I am going to an Atco track rental with the Z guys from Z06vette.com nest Tuesday. They are really cool guys. I'm looking forward to it.

By the way, this thread was picked up on that website. Pretty interesting. Most of those guys (especially the guys that I am running with) are very knowlegeable about our cars.

Here is a link to the E55 thread on the Z06 forum. Sounds like some of them have the proper respect for our cars.
