Which is it 5.5 liters or 5.4?
Over the last year of owning my 55 I have read many posts and articles that say the E55 motors are a 5.4 liter and several post that call it a 5.5 liter. Which is it? Are the supercharged motors different than the N/A motors?

Was wondering about that too...
For the 2005 E55, here http://www.mbusa.com/brand/models/E55.jsp it says "AMG-built intercooled supercharged SOHC 5.4L 24-valve V-8 engine."
and if you select Features and Specs -> Specifications ( http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...pec=0&menu=3_0 ) it says "Engine AMG-built intercooled supercharged 5,439 cc SOHC 24-valve 90° V-8. High-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block..."
For the 2006 S55, here http://www.mbusa.com/brand/models/S55.jsp it says "AMG-built 5.5L supercharged 24-valve V-8 engine"
and if you select Features and Specs -> Specifications ( http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...pec=0&menu=3_0 ) it says "Engine AMG-built 5,439-cc supercharged SOHC 24-valve 90° V-8. High-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block..."
both say 5,439-cc and the technical details of both engines appear to be the same.
so maybe it is just a marketing ploy
just like E55 is rated 469HP whereas S55 is rated 493HP.
The 2006 CLS55 is 5.5L but same 5,439-cc and is rated at 469HP.
The 2005 CL55 and 2005 SL55 appear to be rated same as 2006 S55 for the engine.
Anyone know if there's a real difference with these engines?

my guess is that they are the exact same engines but it's the restrictions that keep them differently apart.. example would be if the exhaust would restrict where the CL and SL and S would have better flowing or maybe something like the intake. If you have the same engine but restrict air coming in and restrict the air goinig out, i assume it would produce less power in the outcome.. just my 0.2cents..

"55" versus a true 5.4L is just a marketing tactic. As long as the specs are accurate, the model designation can be called whatever the mfr wants.
For example, the "600" current Mercedes is 5.5L (5,513 cc). And the Ford Mustang GT/LX "5.0" from a few years back was actually 4.9L in displacement. Makes for better marketing, no question.
Imagine if the Volve XC90 actually had 9 liters under the hood...

I noticed this difference between the CLS55 and the E55, too. My first impression: Cool, they improved the engine - well, just an illusion..
