Best brake upgrade for W211 E55 sedan?
Hi AMG drivers,
I am interested in getting an E55 sedan and was already looking into the possibilities of brake upgrades. Evosport offers a so called Brembo "big brake kit" , Kleemann offers a high performance brake kit with 380mm discs. Does anyone here have an upgraded brake system? Are there other ones available than the ones I have mentioned? Which one would you guys recommend?

I think you're right. The Brabus brakes are very expensive but got excellent reviews in German magazines. Kleemann offers brakes which are equally pricey. I guess the best option is to get the 380 mm front compound brakes from the AMG performance package.

Although our stock brakes may post some very impressive specs, but they are still far from the best. Our rotors are non-directional and are very heavy. A 2 pc rotor ala SL 65 would be a nice upgrade.
I think a lot of my issues with the E55 brakes are the SBC system. The feel is very synthetic, with great initial pedal feel, but it seem like you really gotta mash the pedal to stop at times.

Guys, I think you are absolutely barking up the wrong tree. The problem with our cars brakes is that there is too little cooling. They are made to do a few high speed stops as if you were on the autobahn, not track driving. You will bury them if you drive hard. The only think you should focus on is increased cooling ... NOT "bigger" brakes.

The problem with the brakes, other than cooling, is that they are HEAVY. Yes, the brakes are MUCH better than in previous model AMG cars, but bigger is NOT always better. In fact, a lighter 4 pot setup would probably work better on front of the car than what it has now, but for all intensive purposes, what's on the car is more than adequate. But have you ever picked up the stock brake disc?? You can get a good workout by lifting one! And the SL55 disc is even heavier! Yes, the calipers are made by Brembo, but the discs are definitely not what you would find in an off-the-shelf Brembo brake kit...read: lighter, floating multi-piece, aluminum hat, etc. In fact, on the 65 AMG cars, Mercedes has gone to a multi-piece disc to reduce brake fade and reduce unsprung weight to increase overall brake effectiveness. Note also that the 65 AMG cars have extra brake cooling ducts in the front bumpers.
evosport is in final R&D with a DIRECT brake disc replacement for the OE E/CLS/S/CL55 AMG brake disc on all four corners (No modifications are necessary. The disc will bolt directly to the car and work with OE AMG brake calipers). Not only will the upgraded disc help mitigate brake fade, but reduce unsprung weight by as much as 15lb. per corner up front! And you get to keep the OE look of the calipers w/o going to a more expensive solution that requires replacing them. These discs are more inline with what you find on the 65 AMG cars.
The central “hat” section of the disc is made from 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum. The disc is made from cast iron, constructed in the USA and is made to the same specification and material as used by professional racing organizations. It is a curved vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cooling air through the disc.
The rotor and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes high strength alloy steel drive pins and are cadmium plated for long lasting corrosion resistance. These pins take the load from braking actions while maintaining the axial and radial float between the hat and disc. The pins are secured by grade 12 cap screws with hardened washers.
Below is a shot of what the discs would look like. I will post more pictures of the actual parts as well as shots on the car and pricing soon. We are currently taking pre-orders. Please call or email for more information (888-520-9971 or sales@evosport.com).

Here's a shot of the SL65's stock 15.4" (the E55 uses a 14.2" disc up front) front brake disc. Note the multi-piece setup with center hat compared to one-piece disc on an E55...
