Pics from 2005 AMG Challenge at Road America
Trust me, it was much more fun than my poor photography skills would lead you to believe. Particularly the photo of the SLR speeding by does not do justice to what it was like in person. I quickly snapped the pic while the SLR blew past an E55 on the straightaway. The AMG's were limited to 100mph on the track. The E was probably close to that and the SLR flew by like the E was standing still.

Sorry Jam, I didn't take the camcorder because I knew we'd be jumping in and out of cars and I was afraid I'd lose or break it. I was going to do a vid with my digital camera on the hot lap, but I decided to be selfish and watch it all first hand.

"100 MPH limit"??!! That's routine speeds for me! That sucks. No limits last year at Homestead. 140-150 easily reached on the long straight. Doesn't the Challenge web page have all kinds of stuff about "no limits, blah blah blah?

100 mph made sense here, otherwise there would be too much damage to the cars and the Track would have to be closed every time someone wipes out.
To put these speeds in perspective:
Tommy Kendall could barely reach 150 mph on the longest straight!
Driving an SLR,I might add....

The Road America course is no cakewalk - lots of twists, turns, and elevation changes. Given the length of the track, it takes seat time to get used to its nuances and get into a rythym. With the varying experience of the Saturday participants, the 100 mph limit makes sense.
Only 150? I heard that the SLR was doing 160-165 on the main straight - and that was without flogging it.

Road America happens to be one of the most difficult ,twisty Tracks in the US,so you can't compare speeds achieved on "easy" ones.
Besides, only 150 in the SLR because of lack of space.
