Yep, she's the real deal alright, buuuuttttt

Average working Joe running my dyno this week commented, "Mercedes sure seems to be one up on BMW in design, the new ones are so ugly.....and yours really looks nice"

Even the common man can see it.

I think that the M6 is a pretty all around great car. You just can't argue with the numbers we're seeing these days for cars like this and the new Z06. Its a good time to be a fast car fan.

I like the M6. However, I would still prefer the Porsche. Not to mention modding the 996TT would yield very good gains vs. modding an M6.

I don't know where you got your information, but a giac chip, intake and exhaust will cost nowhere near $10k. More like $6k, and this is from one of the most reputabe Porsche tuners in the USA. (Evo)
X50 package on the 996TT, while still expensve, was around $15k or so.

plus labor
the giac level 1 wich boosts 50 hp to the 996 cost 3,500 bucks for the flash why dont you call giac and ask them your self.

my friends father paid 30k to get his tt into an x50

The M6 put buslengths on that TT Porsche. I doubt that even a (stock) GT2 would be able to beat it.

I almost bought a 996TT, but family issues made me decide on the E55. Still, I did my homework as I always planned on modifying whichever car I ended up with. Before I ultimately decided on the E55 and spoke with several tuners, including Evo in Arizona, which is one of GIAC's biggest sellers. I was quoting a Stage 2 from Evo with the standard GIAC flash. However, I had forgotten about the GIAC flashloader, and you are correct, it is around $3500 depending on which programming you choose.
But compare a $3500 flashloader to whatever comes out for the M5-M6 and see which comes out better hp/$

You can't buy an X50 package and add it on to a standard 996TT. The only way to get the X50 is from the factory. The price on the X50 package is $17000. To paraphrase you "why don't you call Porsche and ask them yourself"

No arguing the M6 is fast. In fact, it better be, dammit!!! I'm on the waiting list for one at my local dealer.

But I will probably pass if I find a sweet 996TT.

I don't know if I'd make that bet. The GT2 has a power to weight ratio of 6.25 lbs/hp. The 2006 M6 has a hp/lb ratio of 7.4 lbs/hp. I'd say it would be a close one that would depend on the driver and the gearing but, IMHO, the Porsche, with a good driver, would have the edge from a standing start and as speed increased. The M5 would do well from a roll but the GT2 would open the distance as speed increased.

That M6 blew the TT away. It just seemed too easy, are we sure it was a 6 speed or just a tip? Maybe it was staged

Talking Have you noticed ??

In all of the M5 & M6 videos we have seen the V10's all have been from a roll (40+ etc.) I think they excel at higher speeds and will only race at the "roll" which they are moving there mass at manageable speeds to eliminate the competitions torque advantage. Don't get me wrong they will probably beat our E55's in lots of rolling races, but race them from a standstill and utilize our torque advantage is the way to play against these guys. In the muscle car era I owned a Chevy 409 (remember the beach boys song?) in racing the Mopars (426 Plymouths & dodges) I would only race these guys from a "Roll" to offset their superior "Out of the hole" Torqueflite transmissions. These cars literally leaped out of the hole when they Brake torqued and pulled away from me even though our HP ratings were the same.
I am willing to bet that our 1/4 mile times will be better because they have to race from a dead stop. Even with their "Launch Control" they have to rev to 4000 rpm to get up in their torque band. But when all is said and done, THOSE CARS ARE BUTT UGLY, PERIOD!

Regardless of which car is faster, I think it's great that today's automakers are producing cars with so much technology and power. I think it's funny when the older people recall the "good old days" of musclecars, but I feel the good times are NOW. Stock for stock, I bet hardly any 60's-early70's era musclecar could run with todays E55 or M5. Even then, the most powerful ones did not have air conditioning and sometimes not even power steering or power brakes due to the low vacuum condition from lopey cams. Add the fact that the deep gears required were not practical on the highway, and it puts things into even more perspective.
I'm with deaguero (blonde drug enforcement agent?) on the 1/4 mile thing. The SMG is tricky to launch, and I would not be surprised if we romp on the M5's at the dragstrip, but get owned on the highways.

Why do you always make posts trying to lessen BMW's achievments with their v10 powered M's. Its not the end of the world if the M can beat the odd AMG.

With so many owner meeting up to run against the M6, do you really belive the owner of a 996 would pretend to loose and have the story posted on several car forums.....
He lost not once but twice.

Even the founder and owner of Koenigsegg cars attended the meeting with his Koenigsegg monster, ........ no he did not race -- that would have been a flat out murder....

On this event the M6 lost some but won most of them.....
Regarding Tip or manuel, I have no clue.

If Gustav check in, he can maybe fill in the answer.....

One major reasson for most races go from 40 or so, is that a full LC start is extremly heavy on the clutch.

IMO a race from the roll is much more interessting to see, and tells a lot more about the perfromance than a race from 0.
Both the E55 and the M5/6 996 Turbo++ will reach 40mph in app 3 sec and to me those short seconds is much less important than what will happend in the next 15-20 sec.

I guess its matter of preferances.
