Okay, what can we swipe off the new SL??

Throttle body would be my first pick.....wonder what the fresh air intake improvement is? Blower would be too much.....or would it??

2007 SL Improvements

A new
supercharger and larger throttle valve in the further improved AMG
5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine of the SL 55 AMG result in improved
fresh air intake and an increase in maximum output from 368 kW/ 500
hp to 380 kW/517 hp.

Could this be a mid year improvement on the 5.5 Supercharged line up accross the board.

its probably just a better ECU tuning..

25+hp is nothing for this engine. If the torque and HP increase 50hp/tq then you are talking more of a revision in certain components.

Either way, I don't understand the change in HP with the 63 engine out soon.

could it be the SL will receive the 63 engine later?

Naaaaah - their press release said:

The improved AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine at the heart of the SL 55 AMG is equipped with a new, higher-speed supercharger compressor and a larger throttle valve to optimise the fresh-air supply. These modifications plus the installation of an even more efficient engine management unit have boosted the output of the AMG V8 powerplant from 368 kW/500 hp to 380 kW/517 hp, while the peak torque has been increased from 700 to 720 Nm. The electronic engine management now features cylinder-selective pilot control of the firing angle: this function sets the optimum combustion point individually for each cylinder, resulting in a further improvement in the efficiency of the AMG V8 engine.
You can probably take that statement to the bank -- or your favorite tuner(!).

And I don't see why, right off the top of my head, that this wouldn't represent a refreshment of the 5.5 SC motor...and might not be available across the line-up of models with the engine. I know that some cars can breathe and exhale better due to space contraints - or the lack thereof - but I don't see any reason not to expect some or all of these changes to show up elsewhere....

The only way the SL gets the 6.3L is if it's the turbo version they're working on (think SL69). The N/A version of the 6.3L will not find its way into the SL.

Layman translation from the press release above:

higher-speed supercharger compressor

This is another way of saying more boost for a given engine RPM. Either the compressor gear reduction has been changed or a smaller pulley is being used.

cylinder-selective pilot control of the firing angle

This means that, based on the knock sensor readings and crank position, individual cylinders will receive a timing adjustment instead of all cylinders at the same time. IOW, if one or more cylinders are detonating, only the offending cylinders will have the timing retarded. The rest will remain at full power.

I haven't wanted to enter into the whole speculation thing, because I can afford to wiat and see what happens on an indiviual model. But I have thought for a long time that the NA 6.3 isn't going to find its way into either the SL55 or the G55.....

A later down-the-line biturbo V8? Maybe.....

I do like the SC 5.5 engine though, and this does sound like an improvement -- what's not to like?!!!

I don't think it's speculation. With TWO bi-turbos based on the 6.3 in development they're not going to settle on the 500HP N/A version in the flagship models when models like the ML63 are being produced (also MB's trademarked 'SL69' for a reason?).

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
Sounds like quite alot of re-engineering for 16 odd HP?

I reckon its mostly software... and maybe one or two pulleys.

i agree,
but then that would mean that only the s, sl, cl, and maybe g will get the turbo version.
there is a n/a 63 cls, so the e will also get the n/a and the clk just got the n/a, c and slk will definitely not get the turbo; if they ever get the 63.

unless there will be turbo e and cls amgs that r a step above the "regular" 63's

i doubt that they will ever put 63t into anything smaller than the e class, itll eat slrs for breakfast

I agree

just with a smaller pulley alone, will yield significantly more gains the 17 hp or 19 hp...

it could be a revised pulley almost as stock with most the ECU providing a better fuel to air ratio.. for the additiona power.

either way, the added power is not significant. I say if you own a SL55, just get a ECU and Pulley from Renntech and you will have real gains.

Personally, I've got no need for other-than-stock drivetrain in my e55, but I sure have fallen in love with the new 14 spoke rims pictured on the SL55 thread.

Do the E and SL 55's share the same offsets, etc. such that a set of those rims would fit without standoffs or modification? thanks for your insights.

Thumbs up Better Engine Management!

To be able to individually change timing in each cylinder as Detonation starts to occur is the biggest improvement on the SL 55K Motor!! This would be a great addition to any 55K Motor and would further enhance any of the After Market Mods. available from Kleeman, Rentech, Etc ......

I would be very interested in this upgrade from MB, but I fear it would involve new & more timing sensors (maybe new Flywheel) and a new ECU. This may not be possible if the car was not originally manufactured with this timing up-grade.

This would be truly be an awesome upgrade. - Bob
