'04 E55 just doesn't feel fast . . .

Just spent my first full day in my new-to-me 04 E55. I've got to say, I'm a little bummed . . . this car just doesn't feel that much faster than my 01 E55. I know these cars are prone to IC pump failures, could that be the case here?? What other suspects should I check? I drove a SL55 a few months back and it felt WAAAAYY faster than this E55.

I'm taking it to get dyno'd tomorrow, so that should shed some light on whether it's the car or my head. Can anyone tell me what these cars should dyno stock??

Thanks!!

I think 493 * .80 should equal rwhp.

So 390hp sounds pretty good.

I'll go out on a limb and say if it doesn't feel fast then something is definitely wrong and I wouldn't bother dynoing but rather take it in for a check up.

Coming from a W210, the W211 should feel significantly faster. Many of us have knocked on the door of 11s in the 1/4 mile with our cars, even on street tires (at least one has made it). If the car feels sluggish, I'd get it checked out.

Good luck!

It could be the IC pump but mine would wine before it gave out completely. As far as it feeling not fast, I would take it to get checked out. I drive a viper on the weekends, and I am still pleasently surprised when I stomp on the AMG monday morning. Also the speed of the 55 is deceptive, with out a drop top and a quite interior its hard to tell sometimes. Watch the speedo, good luck.

from a complete stop, put it in S mode, down shift to first gear, turn esp off...

then hammer it.... let us know what happens, if it chirps the tires and goes.... something is wrong.... supercharger isn't coming on...

if it roasts the tires and you have to let off, then you're good....

Here's my stock 06 E55 dyno with 1500 miles on it if you want to look at for comparison. Outside temp was approximately 85 degrees.

what color is your E55?

if you are thinking of getting rid of it, let us know.

I'm in a market for one with low miles (grey, silver, white) and at the right price (private party value or less)

A little back-road testing this evening netted some interesting results. OAT was approximately 54* during testing. Over 3 20-100mph runs, the car went from feeling very quick, to having the supercharger fail to engage completely. (engine would make rpm but felt like an e320) After a 3 minute "cruise" I could again feel some power and hear a slight blower whine on acceleration. After one more full throttle pull, the car again lost power. I pulled over, popped the hood and reached down to feel the intercooler heat exchanger (at least what I think was it based on my readings here). The cooler was cold to the touch all the way across. That tells me the pump is not running at all as no heat is being bled by the exchanger.

Am I on crack or does this make sense to everyone else?? I'm taking the car in first thing tomorrow, so hopefully I'm not completely off-base.

Thanks for all the help gang!!

IC pump failure problems. Get the Evo or Kleemann IC pump upgrades. Stock pump only does something like 17l liters per minute whereas Klemann or Evo pumps do 70+ liters per minute.

I would not base your conclusions on the fact that the SL55 feels way faster. The SL sounds way faster but I'm not sure that it is. My wifes E55 feels docile in comparison to my SL55 even befor the mods. and I think it is a function of the sound that thye SL emits. However reading what you have said herer it appears that there is definetly some kind of malfunction occuring.

Get the intercooler pump issue fixed. I have read it does not necessarily throw a code, so you might have to actually fight to have it checked. Good luck and tell us how it goes.

OK, here's the update:

Car is at the dealership right now. Service manager wanted a tech to test-drive the car to re-create the power loss problem. It's raining and rush-hour in LA right now. Fortunately, the service writer AND the tech assigned to wreck, errrr, test-drive my car both agreed that the problem sounded like the IC pump and/or temp sensor that activates it. Both parts are being checked now. Hopefully that'll resolve the issue.

hey GTA23109a I recently took my car to the Rusnak Pasadena dealer for the same reason. The tech drove the car and said that he didn't feel or see anything wrong with the car. So they weren't able to do anything. So I took my car to the dyno to see if the power loss was there and it wasn't just me and sure enough I was at 353rwhp 432rwtq and I have a renntech pulley & ECU. Which dealer did you take your car to? I need to find a dealer that will take a look at the IC Pump to see if that's the problem with the car.
Thanks

Take it back to Rusnak and ask them to hook it up to Star Diagnostics. If the IC pump is bad, it will show up there. Then ask them why you have to tell them how to do their job properly.

The car is at Calabasas Motorcars. The service writer that helped me is Trevor Drake. He seemed very knowledgable and has been very helpful.

Now, that being said, they still have my car and I don't know what, if anything, they will find/fix/replace to correct the problem. I'll be sure to post a followup as soon as I get the car back.

OK, got the car back. According to the paperwork, all sensors were tested and found to be within spec. A "load test" was done on the system and found intake temp to go to 196*. IAT sensor checked out ok and IC pump had power and was running. Flow tested pump and found to have very low flow. Installed new IC pump.

With traffic and crummy weather, I didn't have the chance to beat on the car too hard going home, but from what I can tell, it definately feel more consistent, if nothing else. It goes on the lie-detector Tuesday with full data acquisition, so we'll see what that has to say.

AMS in Carson. They have a badass Maha dyno and all the data acq. goodies. You'll need to call them and make an appointment though.
