70 C / 160 F Thermostat
Hi Folks:
I've been working on a 70c / 160 f replacement thermostat . So far it will fit a E-55 with a M-113 engine , The factory piece is 87 c / 189 f
Opinions , is it needed? Thanks ___PTE___

Sounds great, but there are a couple pitfalls to watch out for.
First, it's going to suck in winter time as the car will have a hard time maintaining temperature. Been-there, done-that with other low-temp thermostat applications.
Second, the ECU calibration needs to be adjusted so the car doesn't get stuck in "cold-start" mode (for lack of a better description) and run rich as heck thinking it still needs to warm up.
If you can overcome these obstacles (mainly the second one) it could prove a very worthwhile, and cost-effective mod.

When cruising ac on or off, the temp drops to 165. According to my data logger cold start mode turns off at about 130-140 degrees. The o2 sensor voltage and fuel trim changes around there and looks identical to factory thermostat. Big thumbs up from me so far.

Maybe the throttle is a little "crisper"?? etc...or no difference.
If we can get our beasts to run a little cooler - it will enable us to tweak a few more HP out of them!

70 C / 160 F hermostat
It is by request , I hand build them . In my spare time. If you send me a new one . About $80.00 from a MB dealer. Unfortunately the dealer is the ONLY place you can get one . and they come from The little black forest , in Germany. May look for a used one. E-Bay
It will run you about $40.00 for my mods. you may also find a MB tech that is familar with Star Diag. and have them reset the trip value , to a lower temp setting for your radiator suchion fan. Take care ___PTE___

-10 C mod
160 F* is about it. I really do not want to go colder . Then the ECU will see a colder than expected range . And your fuel mileage will drop off.

Fan setting
they can change it about 18 degrees F. lower from the factory setting. The fan speed varies . comes on at a slow speed around 200 F. with no air condition , and can hardly be heard. But with the air conditioning on , it really spins up. and you can hear it!! The ecu responds to temp it sees . then acts additively on a temperature curve

When I had my Corvette I to changed my stock thermostat for a lower temp one. I believe it was 160 compared to a stock 190. (I may be off on the numbers) I did it to keep the temps down while driving through town or in traffic. It also kept the car from pinging when temps went up. This is the first time that I have seen someone wanting to try keeping the car cooler by this method. I know it works. I would like to know what the guys at EVOSPORT or Kleemann have to say about this?

Its hard to believe that by simply using a lower thermostat ,it will help our car with the heat problem.Usually this is done with none blower cars, and seems to help.
I have done it to my 03 ZO6 and the car runs cool........but according to Kleemann the heat problem experienced in the E55,is due partly to a poor design in the cooling system by MB.
Maybe this is the answer to our heat problem........no one have ever mention doing this before.

Lower Thermostat
Hi Folks:
This is actually what I was looking for!! The combination of both the suchion fan reset to a lower temp and the 160 Degree F thermostat may work well in the warm year round regions. Keep It coming Thanks ___PTE___

Any luck on making one for the C32 AMG? I thought someone else with a C32 AMG was getting this mod done. Is the thermostat located on the front of the motor right behind the radiator?

Those of you who have this mod... what are your thoughts, impressions and feedback after running it for the past few months?

Great Mod
Hey! I have this mod and I endorse it whole-heartedly. As pointed out, the ecu makes all necessary fuel - air adjustments at about 140 degrees, so this thermostat certainly get the system warm enough to keep the ecu happy. I had mine installed last week with my Kleemann pulley, so the thermostat has been tested assertively as I enjoyed the benefits of the pulley. The temp never rose to more than a bar above the 80 degree mark on the dash. Previously, it rode at 2 bars above the 80 mark - sometimes 3 on a very hot day or after aggressive driving. Also, I now note that even after it pushes above 80, if I cruise passively on the freeway or idle for a minute or 2, the temp gague will actually drop back to 80.
BTW, thanks again for the time you took to return my call and discuss your thoughts on the Kleemann C55. I am the one that almost bought a Kleemannized C55 for sale in CO Springs and you indicated that you loved the C, but just thought the E was a better bet. I agree and I love my new E! Thanks again!

more info on the thermostat please
how much?
where to buy it?
part number?
how easy to intall?
Also, for those who have the 10 degree fan adjustment, can dealers perform this change? or do we need need to find somebody with a Star Diag system?

I have this mod and got a Check coolant at the service station malfunction. Not sure what that means...perhaps the coolant temp was too low. I think it was after I coasted down a mt. for 3 miles in neutral and my coolant temp got down to 65-70C or so.
Has anyone gotten this message too?

The t-stat can also trigger a check engine light, for engine temp bieng out of range. My car only does it when i don't let it iddle for a few minutes before i take off in the morning.

Again, been there done that too.
Having a dealer/shop doing -10C mod with factory software would be a more beneficial mod long term, in my opinion.

I agree. Playing with thermostat, potentially can create more trouble (oil consumption, loss of power, main/rod bearing wear) than it's worth.
