Question How To Remove?

How does the black plastic shroud around the instrument cluster come out. Mine just began rattling and it is driving me insane.

Thank you!

on the cls, you just pull it out. there are little clips on there and when i removed mine on the cls55, it broke off a couple of the clips. i just put the plastic back in after installing my v1 and all has been fine since. i wonder if you have one of the clips in there rattling around as I bet thats what it is. heres the v1 install....

Thanks dogshine. Is the black shroud and the clear plastic that covers the cluster all one piece on the CLS as it appears it might be two seperate ones on the E (anyone here know for sure?) I was able to slide a credit card just below the odo, between the clear plastic and the black shroud which stopped the rattle.

that black plastic thing with the chrome edge pulls right out... just put your fingers on it and rotate around pulling on it. its just a big oval piece of plastic. no clear plastic attached. i bet its the same on your car.

try it out or just take it in an complain.... the dealer will fix it for you. : )

Is it one or two pieces? In other words, the black piece is seperate from the clear plastic that covers the gauges?
Thanks

No. But here's a link to a thread on the W211 forum, but as you will read I can't tell if it's one or two pieces as it looks as if one is missing in the pic???

ok, let me confirm we are talking about the same thing. in my pic in the cluster, there is a black plastic ledge with a chrome ring directly behind the steering wheel. it slides into the wood and rests against the guage cluster. thats the one i took off.l. the ledge.

if yours is the actual tach and between the clear plastic you see thru to see the guage, thats now what i removed.

The black plastic ledge/shroud appears (but I'm not sure) to be seperate from the gauge cluster and clear plastic lens, my rattle is right between the two, so if I can just remove the black plastic part I might be able to permanently fix this damn rattle. Sorry if I confused the issue

well, you can pull the ledge out with your fingers. just start in one place and pull all the way around. just go slow and an extra set of hands wouldn't hurt as well. good luck!

I'll give it a shot in the a.m. and thanks again for the help .

If anyone here knows for sure if the 211's are one or two pieces and exactly how to do it I would appreciate a quick reply.

You mean THIS one piece plastic thingamajiggy that has four little clips on it? Yup, it comes out pretty easy... just start at the bottom center, pull a little, pry lightly at the corners with a small flathead... one corner will come loose and the rest follow easily. Just watch out for your reset knob.

Hope this is quick enough....

that is the one i was talking about... except the cls doesn't have those four huge clips... there are just some small clips around the edges (that break off when you take it out... but its still fine when you put it back in)

there's not much you can do other than push it in and make sure all four sides are clipped. I was actually just changing mine out for a birdseye version, so I found the timing ironic.

If you have something lose, I'd check each post that the clips connect to in the instrument cluster and make sure they are ok... they consist of two posts each and can be bent a little... hopefully one isn't just broken, and thus not secure...

good luck,

Loren

Thanks Loren. All ends are secure but due to plastic against plastic I'm getting a rattle. Once I get the thing out I'll insulate it with some felt tape etc and if that doesn't work the trusty tech at the dealership will take care of it I'm sure. Lets see some pics of the birdseye.

BTW you look a bit like Bruce Willis when he had hair...

I'll be posting pics soon of all the birdseye stuff when all of it arrives... serious backorders on some of this stuff!

So far, the stuff looks nice... a little darker than the OEM stuff though...

If felt does not work add some silicone sealant to the clip ... it wont rattle then - but will also be removable if need be - with only slightly more effort.

Loren:

I tried to remove mine but it seems either I'm not doing it right or the clips are really tight. Where exactly did you put the flat head as I don't want to mar the dash.

Thanks
