Automobile Mag pics E63 over M5

Latest Automobile mag picked the E63 1st, S6 2nd, M5 last. Also stated the E63 was the fastest of the 3, not by much though. No real test numbers, but they commented on how well the E63 handled vs the M5 and did not have the myriad of power/shift programming/suspension tuning combos of the M5 that were just silly.

That's good news but Automobile does not do any independant performance testing, I believe it uses only the manufacturer's stats.

i think they did drive all 3 cars. m5, s6, e63.

selected quotes on e63-
"particularly emotional machine- mean looking, acoustically overwhelming, very fast yet velvety smooth or bondage brutal"

"by a wafer thin margin- the most compelling engine. wins torque trophy and acceration medal."

"even under pressure the nose of the e63 finds it easy to stay close to the apex"

"unlike the m5 which feeles a little twitchy at the limits of adhesion the e63 hugs the tarmac"

"the fact that the m5 has fallen so far so fast tells you 3 things:this is an extremely fast moving business. that even a well founded status quo can be eroded by clever evolution. That the big engine in mid sized car game is competitive as ever".

my comments- the 0-60 is useless...traction issues basically render meaningless times. i'd like to see say 30-120 mph. the e63 thoug not a toque monster like the e55 does have more torque at 2600 rpm than the m5 at peak. that plus the 7 speed means more area under the curve and acceleration than will handily eclipse the m5.

the comments i find most interesting are the favourable ones regarding handling. we'll see in due course how the other rags peg the e63. i'm hoping the handling comments hold sway.

Thought it was a very significant issue (I'm a subscriber to Automobile and becoming increasingly loyal) because (1) these comparos often end up with MB losing out for feeling "disconnected" / having an automatic (supposedly verboten for "real" drivers' cars); and (2) there are a few additional articles about AMG that reflect a real editorial respect for this division, even relative to BMW's M and Audi's S.

Go out and get the issue, you will be pleased. The mainstream automotive press finally realizing that AMG is creating the best in the business right now.

I own an M5. If the E63 had been available, it would have been a tough decision, because the 6.2 AMG engine and the new 7-speed transmission had a lot of advance appeal. I decided against waiting because the E-series body will likely be updated in a few years and because of concerns about handling and tactile communication between car and driver, so I'm very interested to see if other comparison articles rate the handling of the E63 as highly as Automobile. At this point it looks as if MB deserves a round of applause for the E63.

From an M5 owner's perspective the trade journals are missing the mark on SMG and the M5's set up complexity. Once an owner learns SMG's logic and timing, the transmission works beautifully. And all of those set up buttons, which journalists decry, logically control different aspects of car behavior and come right out of the box with excellent default settings. If the owner wants to change something, it's a set it and forget it affair, with all of the owner's special preferences activated by the touch of a button. I just get in my car each morning and drive away.

in regards to handling, how much has the e63 improved over the 55's?! I havent read much about it apart from hearing that the brakes are lighter...

Hugs the turns??

Interesting to see the comment on how the E63 handles. I have an -06 E55 and am very dissapointed in its handling. Does long sweepers great, but pray that I don't have to make a real turn. That being said, my last car was a 911 Turbo which had AWD, so I'm still getting used to the differences.

The confusing point is that all I heard about the M5 was that it was so much more of a driver's car and that it handled great. (haven't driven one yet)

Were there major changes in the suspension for the E63??

If my memory serves me correctly, they changed the steering ratio, the front control arms (mounting location), and the software on the suspension --

There should also be a reduction in unsprung weight due to the new braking system's construction; and there may be a slight improvement in weight balance due to the change in the engine....

anyone else?

Oh, and the car may have PS2's on it instead of the conti's.

I personally love the E vs the CLS, since I have a family (2 boys)

But to be fair, they should compare the CLS63 vs M5, both are new products and have latest and greatest technology.

The E63, while its new as fars drive train, the chasis and suspension design has been out a while.

I don't expect the E63 to beat the M5 E60 in handling or breaking, but I sure hope AMG CLS63 to put up a better fight in those departments.

I can't wait to see some factual data from R&T, C&D and MT.
