Horror Story re: Keyless Go
Could the car have somehow reset a security feature that made the key no longer good? I am thinking of a computer code that would protect us from "fake" chips. Dunno. I would be very upset as well.
Keep us in the loop as to what MB says. Interesting to see if they get the original key to work or if they can figure out what is up. My assumption is that you will be able to program it back in. I think it got dumped, and that is why the spare worked.
"edit" in fact now that I think about it..I had to insert my key for it to get recognized again ! When I got home is when I reset the key dependant setting to off....gotta go look at the manual to see what the hell that does.

However, something similar happened to me last weekend. After a spirited drive home, I was approaching a stop light and when my car came to a full stop, the engine shut down for no apparent reasons. I was using Keyless Go at that time and I tried to use the Start / Stop button to fire up the car again, but that failed. I had to insert the key into the ignition to get her fired up again. However, there was no error codes in the MFD. I still don't know what's wrong with the car, but it had not happened again in the past week.
FYI - Whenever I go out of town, I take both keys and give the other one to the passenger. I do not have 100% confidence in the system, even though mine has never failed to work properly.

the key has several different features build inside...it transmits radio frequency to open & lock the car...it tranmits IR to roll up/down the windows AND it has a chip for the car to recognise...that is 3 different features AND NONE OF THESE 3 FEATURE WERE WORKING ANYMORE.
Even if the battery is dead - the car will still start when it recognises the key (keyless or with the key in the ignition).
Even if the ignition-recognise chip is toast, the car can still be locked/unlocked BUT NOTHING WORKED ANYMORE.
What did surprise me is that roadside assistance in chicago travels around WITHOUT stardiagnose (now how is that suposed to work with the nowadays benzes)...
however - glad to know that you made it home afterall Gene...
greetingz,
Actually, not pulling the key out of my briefcase at all is quite nice. Mine has also never failed.

Oh I'm too lazy to pull out the key.

I agree with Ricky. It is a great convenience to open the door in rain or with my hands full, without having to first find my key and push a button.

I never liked the idea. The inlaws have it. I'm going to mention this to them.

Also, you may want to get that tick looked at. Autoimmune issues can really come into play with old age.
