What's your top speed with in a stock E55?

I was driving back from Florida and had a long flat desolate (rare) run of interstate and had the itch to see how the E55 feels at 155mph. Mind you that my car was loaded to the gills with luggage and people. I hit 155 pretty hard and before I new it my speedo was registering 160 and wasn't slowing. As I was coming up on traffic quickly I slowed down quickly. I thought that the limiter shut it down at 155. My other MBs all shut down right on the prescribed MPH. What's wrong with mine?

Do gooders please spare me the rants about going to the track to drive illegally. Just don't read this if you don't drive over the speed limit.

same thing happened to me.i was at 160 but let off before the limiter hit,i was passing under an e-pass lane that doesn't have dividers only two lanes w/an overhead scanning boxes, fortunately i didn't get a ticket in the mail;don't know how i got that lucky to not get one.maybe the speedometer is off 5 mph or so at that speed.

Nothing is wrong with yours. I can only speak for the AMG limiters, as I heard this direct from Rob Allen himself, while at the AMG challenge in Fontana.

He said that they are set at 155, but that you can overshoot them if you are mashing it up there. If you creep up, it will stop you at 155. But, if you "punch" it, he thought that you could see 163mph. I think the gist was that the MINIMUM limiter would be 155.

By the way, my top in an E55 is 150 (at Fontana). I had 150mph in my head all day and I finally pushed it till I got it, but that was it. It is pretty hard to get more with just 2 quick laps and traffic.

I can't tell you how upset i am to read this. You should be more reponsible like the guys in the 97 Dodge Rams who tailgate at 80mph on the freeway.
Police should employ common sense and ticket people who haul *** in pieces of crap with a braking distance of 1000ft.

My limiter begins to roll back power at 156 and stops all accelerating at 158. Very quick acting, I must say. It is accelerating quite rapidly when it happens. I have done it 3 times and they were all the same.

To tell the truth, I don't know the exact RPM. I was paying extra close attention to the road. I do think it was around 5k in 4th gear. When the limiter kicked in, it shifted to 5th gear and the RPM dropped to about 4k. I will pay more attention to the tach next time. It takes a few times running at these speeds to feel comfortable with it. I haven't passed the nervous stage yet.

dunno the revs at that speed, but the car's gearing is set up to go to 206mph in 5th.

You are nowhere near the end of power at 150mph.

Mine does the exact same thing. Its really amazing how fast it gets there, you really don't need a long deserted strech, any open 1/2 mile of road and you are there. (starting from 80)

That doesn't say much. Not that I doubt a E55 can do 200 mph, but you need a lot of power to climb speed in a tall gear. And luckily the E55s 5th gear isn't that tall.

The 55k cars actually can do 200 mph, maybe even tad over. But at that point, you'll need a LOT of space. At that speed, the rate of acceleration is probably around 1 mph per 1 or 2 seconds.

I have a buddy with a 520 rwhp Pontiac Trans Am. He has an extremely tall 6th gear, and its geared for 290 mph. But he'll only reach 290 mph with more than ~1200 rwhp and the right aerodynamics, suspension settings etc. theoretically speaking.

5th gear in the E55 is NOT an overdrive gear right?

I wasn't boasting about the speed. I was just answering a concern that the E may be hitting its redline at 150. I'll be sure to let you know when I expect you to be impressed.

Also, getting any Trans Am up to 290mph takes alot more than theory.

I think the north rim of the Grand Canyon would work just fine.

On 'legal tracks' of course, I routinely taker her up to over 140. Feels like 90 mph in a 'mortal's' car. Mwhahahahahah! Love this thing.

New trend I propose: we take pix of us @ top speed, photo the speedo and tach. POst 'em!@

I'm' up first, I'll post it tomorrow if the roads in are clear.

Also you will note you hit VMax in 4th of a stock car ... delimited car should run on to the dark side of 200mph - which will need 5850rpm minimum in 5th with stock wheels....

My calcs show at 6100 rpm (peak power for stock) theoretical VMax is 209mph/336km/h...

From an online calculator (using Cd of 0.26 and frontal area of 2.21m^2) I get a top speed of ~207Mph at 469 Hp. At 500Hp u should achieve ~212Mph. At 560HP (for K2 guys) you would hit 221Mph if the gearing would allow.

So bottom line is we should be able to hit 6100 rpm in 5th .... comfortably.

Anyone done this or get close ? How much runway did you need to do this ?

I was told by the guys at Kleeman that a stock ungoverned E55 was good for mid to high 180's and that it would require a long strech to get there. If you look at some of the "supercars" that do over 200 they are all a lot lighter and have more HP than our E55's. As much as I would like it to be true I find it hard to believe that a stock E55 will break 200 mph.

I don't know if anyone caught the "M" test drive on Speed Channel, it was simliar to the AMG one they had a few months back, with Tommy Kendall again. The guest driver had the new M6 out on the autobahn and made it up to 194. It looked like the car had more in it but not a lot more.

pas,Supercars have a lot downforce to deal with, we have a good cd.

I have held my car on the limiter for about 2km's, reached 261km/h(161mph),
the limiter then kicks in drops slowly to 253, then climbs again to 261 and back. I have no doubt that i could hit 300kmh plus on my "runway", which is about 3km long, 5 lanes wide, dead flat and you can roll the bend into it at about 220km/h. This actually runs alongside our local airport. Will do a vid soon.

I agree, like I said mid to high 180's (around 300KPH), but there is a big difference at those speeds between being able to go 188mph and 198mph. We have all seen vids of E55's breaking the 200mph mark but none of them were stock. But sounds like you have the perfect place to find out, good luck!
