*** 160 Thermostat ***

Just wanted to post up a public THANK YOU to forum member _PTE_..

I sent him a brand new MB thermostat assembly that I purchased from the MB dealer. He was nice enough to mod it up and make it a 160. Stock is 190 I believe.

Will be installing it this weekend if everything goes according to plans.

This should help in further reducing engine temps. Right now the car sits happily at 90C - 93C engine coolant temps since I had the -10C fan mod done.

Hopefully this will push it down to 85C - 90C.

Thanks Patrick! I really appreciate it!

Wouldn't oil be a little more free flowing at 90C?

oil temp and coolant temp are not quite so directly related.

Does the mod also require an ECU flash? Also, is the thermostat a simple bolt on?

No ECU reflash required, but your tech needs to set the fan to about -12c. I have one of _PTE_'s thermostats as well and it's a very nice mod.

Someone should see if this guy had any on the shelves or if he does them on a per unit basis. It would be awesome of everyone could get their hands on one.

I know I'd pick one up if I knew where to get one :::hint hint:::

later,

Just email or PM Patrick.. He is a good guy! For $40 in parts + cost of a stock thermostat housing from MB he can make the mods for you. MB sells the stock housings + thermostat for $100.

MB doesnt sell the thermostat separately from the assembly so you have to incur the costs of buying both.

I still havent installed mine, but, what we can do is, once i put my 160 in, I can send out to the next guy that wants one my stock assembly.. You can paypal me $90 and send Patrick his cost for the upgraded parts..

Then, you will do the same for the next guy, and so on.. This way we use each other's cores to help the next guy out.

What exactly do you guys tell your techs to do when you have them do the -10 mod? I asked mine to do it last week when the car was in for service and he said he has no clue what I am talking about. Is there a special menu to instruct the tech to inside of Star Diagnostics?

Anyone know if the E55 Thermostat is the same as the one on as on the C32/SLK32?

Do you see or feel any difference? I'm not sure what gain there is to a lower temp. I would think a higher flow thermostat or a lower temp with a high flow design would be better.

PTE...not asking you to give away any secrets but the stat only has a spring and a sealed temp sensor...is it in the spring that you adjust temp ?

May not be a big horsepower mod, but the gain of decreasing your chances of detonating is sure worth it. Blowers make an extreme amount of heat, and anyway to help keep it under control is a plus.

Run the IK-22 plugs instead of the stock ones and you will lower your water temp 5 degrees.

It seems to me that once the engine is at temp a cooler termostat does nothing becaus ethe engine is above the thermostat rating it's fully open. The only thing a cooler thermostat would do is open earlier but the engine will ultimatly still get to it's operating temp. THen you are in the same position as the stock thermostat. A higher flow thermostat would at least allow more coolant to move. THis would help if the radiator is capable of removing the heat from the coolant. I still don't see how a cooler thermostat helps anything accept to prolong the engine's warming up. Am I wrong?

The thermostat works as a means to keep the engine warm, not simply speed the warmup. Even with the 160* thermostat in my E55 it will bounce off of it's opening point on a mild temp day. It did the same thing with the stock thermostat . . . only difference was that was about 5-8* warmer. On a racecar I had years ago, we used a Mercruiser (boat) 145* thermostat and it would literally run right around there until you really started beating on it. Our cars have enough cooling system in them to run far below the thermostat opening point, if left to their own devices . . . we're just bumping the "floor" down a few degrees with this modded thermostat.

160 F / 71 C thermostat

Hi Guys:
Its more than a spring. I do not shim the lift / push Pin. It is a different Vernatherm. The internal Wax and Clay is different , and is much larger. When I mod your Stat or build a new one from MB stock \ I return the OEM stuff. along with the modded Stat. Thats so you can See the difference too.

thermostat cross reference

430/Jeremy: I'll check on the C32 SLK32 to see if the thermostat numbers cross reference to the E55, W211 motor.

What I do know is the
C55, CLK55 and the 1999 - 2002 E55 (W210) have a common thermostat number 112-203-02-75. Your email at excite.com does not work ?

DSC
The valve head is .010 smaller. The push pin (160)has a longer stroke than the OEM stock (195) , but is some what limitedby the poppit valve/ bypass. So yes it does flow more Coolant. How much ?? I do not have the Equipment to measure it. I'm Not Dr Z ??and I don't have a HEMI with MDS?? Thanks ___PTE___

C-32 / SLK 32 thermostat

430:
The C-32/SLK-32 Thermostat has it's own part number :-(
112-203-03-75. and doesn't cross over to anything I've modded so far. If you want ,I can order one for you. It should be under a $80.00 . I forgot to get the price
You could also search E-Bay or the bone yards. Oklahoma Foreign ? ___PTE___

Can someone tell me what the main difference will be if I just do the flash through the Star Diagnostic as opposed to replacing the thermostat in conjunction with the Star Diagnostic flash?
