997tt vs e55 1/4 & 0-60

Just got my latest issue of R&T and they have the euro super cars f430 lambo and 997tt vs rt10 & zo6 & gt. They are reporting the pcar running 0-60 in 3.9 and 1/4 mile at 12.3 with a low 113.7 mph trap. Looks like the 55 will give the 997tt a good run.

They also noted that both the Lambo G and the f430 beat the 997tt on the track by over 2-3 seconds. They also beat the pcar in the 0-100-0 by 1 to .5 sec.

I saw a silver 997TT in the La Jolla area today on my way back from a client... I was NOT driving the E55 though.

In the Autocar magazine 0-100-0 test, the 997TT beat the Gallardo by a full 1sec.

Yes, and I would bet the 997TT will be faster than the E55 and E63 by a margin, especially the (faster) tiptronic version! If I remember correctly, Porsche was quoting 11.6s quarter mile for the tiptronic and 0-60 in 3.4s?

In the past, car mags ALWAYS tested P cars with better #s then the traditionally conservative official ones.
That seem not to be the case with the new 997TT which I suspect, has the official data overly optimistic.
That car also had higher expectations from Porsche fans,I'm afraid, since the majority of reports are not as excited by it as was the case with the previous generations.

Wait, the tip is faster than the stick?? What planet am I on?
The 997TT is going to be NO JOKE on the streets, too bad all the rusted out old men who buy them around here will never run them.

Well, considering the fastest trannies are paddles (which is like tip, electronic shifting eliminating the manual clutch), its not hard to believe.

Clutchless shifting (tip, paddle etc.) - fastest
Automatic - second fastest
Manual - slowest

The latest R&T is an anomaly. All the other mags - Autocar, EVO, C&D have been turning 0-100mph numbers from 7.8-8.2 seconds with the 6spd, and 0-60 from 3.4 - 3.7. Around town in bursts the E55 should have no problem staying close.

That, unless in the case of an SMG, is not always true. Especially from launch with a turbocharged car. Rev to 3,000, dump the clutch, watch the AMG in your rearview. Experienced stick drivers can shift FAST, especially if you have a short-shifter and a nice, heavy clutch (like on my blue beast).

there are however, some like myself that really know how to shift manually.many who shift through paddles or buttons try and run to far up past the peak powerband of the motor, negating the gains of the automatic/or clutchless transmisions!

Not ALL Porsche owners are old rusted out old men! lol. Mine is not a turbo, so I dont have that nice torque of the TT of the E55, but it is still fun. Other owners have reported 12.0xx 1/4 mile times in my car, stock. I have no idea what mine can do...BUT, on the freeway, I would think the E55 would pull away from me as it has sooo much torque! 1/4 mile would be a good race I think. On the track, I would check out (and thats where most of my racing is done). That is is why I bought the GT3 and not a GT2 or TT...I like to go to the track. But I still do partake in an occassional challenge here and there! :-)

Any man who buys a GT3 is not a rusted out old man, even if you're 90. That's a car with *****, for an enthusiast with bigger *****. They're a pretty rare occurrence here in Essex County, NJ, by far I see more TT's and C4S's. I did, however see a 997 GT3 in white the other day and almost rammed my escalade into a soccer mom whilst gawking.

Road and Track is one of the most useless car mags out there. The results are testament to their non-existent driving skills rather than anything to do with deficencies in the Porsche.
Autocar just roadtested it and got 1.3secs to 30, 3.6 secs to 60mph, 0-150mph in 19.6 (7secs ahead of DB9, 2secs ahead of F430), 40-60mph in 1.4secs suggesting that Porsche's claims were not "overly optimistic" as one person suggested.
No one is arguing that on a freeway the 55K is a match for most things and it's a great 4-door saloon but it does not come close to matching the 997TT's sheer breadth of dynamic abilities such as handling, grip and braking.

True...but comparing an E55 to a TT is like apples to oranges. Both are built for different purposes and markets. For a sports car, I would take the Porsche. For a nice sedan, the E55 is the best IMHO. They are both at or near the top of thier market, respectively.

Had R&T tested the E55 on the same day, track as those other cars I would think it would have done worse than the porsche. 12.2@118 for the C6Z...WTF. All 3 car mags came in the mail yesterday and it looked like 997tt was going to be significantly faster than the E55 or E63 based on mid 11s with a 0-60 of 3.4. Btw, what kind of 60 foot times does the 997tt need to cut to get a 3.4? 1.7?

Sorry to say, but there is no way in hell a 997TT will lose to a 55 or a 63! You guys can pick your poison from either a standstill, roll from any speed, around town, whatever! As bad *** as the 55 is(My best friend has one and I've driven it many times) and as bad *** as the 63 will be there is no chance. Look at the new Car and Driver mag. and look at the numbers they got: 0-60: 3.4; 0-100: 7.8; 0-150: 19.1; 1/4: 11.7@121. And thats with a manual! Porsche claims the Tiptronic will quicker!

i'm also of the belief that r&t is a little off on their reporting. they have the z06 running low 12's in the 1/4 and i'm sure i'm not the only one that has seen them run 11.7's showroom stock, right down to the tires.

i seriously doubt we 55/63 owners have a chance against either the 997tt or the z06 in any situation...except when the other guy ain't racing.
