I just read a report on the new(997) 911TT which states:
"Incredibly, it can accelerate from 80kph/50mph to 120kph/75mph (more commonly known as an overtaking test) in just 3.8 sec. The previous 911 Turbo took 5 sec to complete the same task. Translation: the new 911 Turbo is breathtakingly quick"
Sounds impressive? Not really.
I took my almost stock E55 on a level freeway, put it in SECOND at 80kph
and floored it till it flew past 120kph. Five times!
I started the stop watch when I floored it and stopped it when it went past 120kph. Almost always at 123-125kph on the digital speedo.
Results: Fastest 3.26 sec, Slowest 3.65 sec.
If the old turbo (996) could only manage 5 sec, which I doubt very much, no wonder I keep beating it down the straight from 70kph to 220 kph.
Can anyone verify this very scientific road test?

Rafal, I wouldn't be shocked. You may be right. I recall reading in Car and Driver (I think) when the E55 first came out that it was the fastest car they EVER tested in this category. I'm sure it will be close with the TT. BTW, I spent an hour with the new TT and it is very fast. Obviously no way to compare these two cars. Would love to have both. I'm working on the TT now and by then maybe my wife will get tired of not having a sedan and will have no problme if I then go buy an E63!!

I know you're referencing a specific speed range but...the new 997 twin turbo weighs about 700 lbs less than an E55 and puts out 480 hp, and using the sports option puts out 506 lb ft of trq ...this car is way faster than any stock E55 or 63 etc...C&D just tested the car and did 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, the QM in 11.7 with a 121 mph trap speed, it also does 0-100 in 7.8 seconds besting the Ferrari F430 and the new Z06 and that's with the 6 speed; the car is even faster with the tiptronic which would also be faster than the 6 speed in the overtaking category due to the auto box...

I love my 55 and I actually drive it more than the heavy-weight Bentley. I've taken Porsche TT's all the time on Sunset, however, I did get burned once by a Turbo (probably had an X50 and 6-speed with an amazing driver).
I doubt that the E55 is faster than the NEW Porsche Turbo in anyway, but your tests seem to prove that wrong. Regardless, the fact that our 55's pull harder the new E63's is amazing. I actually just drove the ML63 and the E63 at my local dealer and even though they are gorgeous cars with a nice new high-revving 7-speed tranny and 500+ HP N/A V8... the 55's seem to pull harder.

As to 997TT being much faster than E55 in almost every respect, nobody is questioning it. I am just querrying sensationalised journalism which sets such low performance bench marks to impress the lesser mortals, who after driving their SUV's and MPV daily, would say: "wooow", that's fast!
I am sure that the 997TT will do this in less than 3 sec.

Not to mention there's definitely a half second to a second worth of good old turbo lag before that thing gets going, then its bye bye E55.

BTW, 997's top gear is SIXTH, not FIFTH...

Try repeat the test in the E55 in 5th manual mode and floor it - it wont kick down ... and you will have a good comparison...

I bet it will be around 6 sec in Fifth and 5 sec in Fourth.

SL55, ML500, GT3 RS, 997C2S
Late breaking news flash
Last night a trusted friend in my SL55 with K2, and I in the 997TT did 3-4 rolling pulls from around 50. The BEST I could do in the 997TT was starting in third, and the SL just had the pedal mashed. On that pull I jumped ahead, don't know how much as the SL was gone from my side window and was not in my rearview mirror. Half car length? Neither car seemed to have the advantage and we went well into the triple digits. That says an awfull lot about the turbo, as the K2's RWHP/TQ is about the same as the turbos crank. If I had to put money on it I would say that the 997TT would very slowly pull on the SL, we just ran out of road.
