Anyone have any videos/stats on this? (i searched but i am pretty slow on the internet ) I imagine that in a race the 63 would win because of torque? But then again the bmw does have 7 gears...

The E63 is equipped with the new 722.9 transmission which is also a 7-speed transmission.

I think M5 will be faster simply because E63 is slower than E55, which is about as fast as the M5.

A race between an M5 & E63 has yet to be seen, so it's a bit early to say anything of which is faster. All I can say is both have 7SPD, and both engines are screamer.

My money is on the M5. Still not sure what the E63 can do, but what I've been reading does not impress me as far as straightline speed is concerned.

M5 for sure. The drag event out in cali had an M5 and E63, given the track conditions weren't the best but both cars were hampered by that. The M5 beat the E63 every run and the E55s were faster than the M5. In the 1/4 mile its E55 > M5 > E63. The trap speed was higher on the M5 than either of the other two so the M5 was picking up a lot of steam farther down the track whereas the E63 was not trapping any higher than the E55 and in fact a little lower.

Just curious...why do you think the E63 is slower then the E55?

For my sake...I hope you are wrong because I just bought a '07 CLS63 AMG which, as I'm sure you know, has the same engine, but is about 175lbs more than the E63. (I ordered a M6, the dealer tried to screw me so I bought the CLS63...I posted info on that ordeal a few days ago).

Any videos I can check out on this?

If you read this forum there are many posts here substantiating(including dynos) that the E55 has more power and is quicker than the E63 in a straight line. The E63 is still a fine automobile and I am sure many would prefer it over the E55.

Less torque in the 63, but 2 extra gears in the transmission equals what ? Is the 55/63 OVERALL difference as substantial as rumored, with all facets considered ?

well, unfortunately i think the cls is a tick slower than the e due to the wheels and/or drag coefficient.

honestly. all this blather from people who seemingly don't have or have driven either of the fine cars! the m5 and the 55's and 63's are, in their own ways, great cars; but each has some shortcomings. the m5 has the atrocious smg transmission that is fun only when ripping up or down the gears, and doing that frequently is going to take a toll on the transmission- and then ther is that absurdly over-optimistic bmw speedometer. the 55's, though abundantly gifted with torque, are subject to heat soak whenever the weather gets hot, and there goes a goodly potion of your torque. the 63's seem to balance out the good points of these other two and i haven't found any offsetting flaws. and yes, the 63 is very fast. for what it's worth, i sold my m5 -NO REGRETS_ and traded my modified 55 on a 63 and couldn't be happier.

A couple corrections to the above statement:
In terms of ET on this slippery 1/4 mile track, the M5 was not faster than the E63 on every run. The cars were about as dead even as possible. The best run all day long for the M5 was only 9 one-thousands of a second faster than the best run of the E63. The best run of the E63 was faster than the next two fastest runs of the M5.

Regarding the trap speeds, it is true the M5 bested the stock E55s and the the E63. However, with the exception of the one very fastest stock E55 time of the day (110.01 mph) , the E63 was next in line with a 109.27, beating all other stock E55 times, including those with drag slicks, using the best 3 runs of the day for comparison.]

Since all cars ran slow on this track and the times got better late in the day, I would caution against using these results to draw many conclusions. Howevery, I did want to correct the errors in the quoted post.

I have driven the M6 and, of course, my CLS63, hard to compare them unless side by side...I spoke to one of the AMG techs when I called Mercedes...He expressed to me that he believes the new 63 engine, although not supercharged, is quicker and faster, he stated that the less torque allows less wheel-spin therfore allowing it to get out of the hole much more smoothly...and a bit quicker...I'll take it for what it is worth...need to see for myself vs some competition...It would be very hard for me to believe that Mercedes would create the NEW engine to be slower!

I will tell you one thing...I went up against a new Z06 yesterday...it dynoed at 485hp - at the rear wheels, the guy told me...I stuck right with him (although behind him) up to 120...he told me that I was the fastest that he has come accross except for a Ford GT he raced...I also took my buddy's '06 M6...I took him to 100 from the dig by 1/2 a car length...then he started to pull...I'll get it on video...

63 is faster !!!! You guys should read less reviews from the dudes that only seen 63's in pics. It is much smoother and quieter wich might make it seem to be slower.

The point most of the members of this board keep coming back to is:

"Show me a 12 second timeslip from a 63"

I don't doubt that its fast, nor do I really care which is faster between the 63 and the 55. I've got my fingers crossed that we do see a 12 sec. time slip from a 63.

i don't own one NOW , BUT we had one of the 1st e63's in Brooklyn , I still live with my parents , me and dad agreed on having 1 sedan and 1 suv for winter, then we always had arguements who's driving what and it was very hard for us to afford it unfortunatelly , then i got a good deal on my 06 maxima SE 6 speed , only 325 a month with 2000 out of the pocket THAT's LIKE FREE, and he bought a 2000 s500 for a very good price, and a relgious Jewish guy we knew for a while took over the lease , i don't have to proove you anything BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO FOR IT , IM DOWN =] ILL MAKE A VIDEO WITH THE BENZ AND SHOW YOU MY MIDDLE FINGER SO WILL THE GUY WHO TOOK OVER THE LEASE AND THE DEALER AND MAKE YOU FEEL REAL STUPID E63 is faster once again than the 55 i would compare it to m5 all the way because the further it goes the faster it is. IM DONE
