List all of the significant problems you've had with your 1998-2002 E55 AMG

I'm trying to figure out what I should watch for as the milage goes up - the common problems and stuff.

Please list your model year, E55 AMG, the mileage you bought it at, the mileage you have it now, and all the problems you've experienced while owning it.

I do NOT mean like a sunroof rattle or a rock chipped windshield or problems with aftermarket modifications. I mean what stock parts on your E have let you down, and at what mileage did they do so?

.........very solid car. Probably one of the best built Mercedes ever. 70K miles now, purchased at 56K miles. No issues. Aware of W210 E55's with over 90K miles and no issues. Instrument cluster may need to be replaced due to truncated numbers.

hmmm

bought with 10 miles ... currently over 98k miles.

biggest things that I have seen is the middle door panels (outside) faded.
Center console around the passenger airbag is cracking. (same place as my E320)
Whine from airconditioning ... it was a tube that cracked.
Had to replace shocks(or whatever they are called) around 70k miles.
if you really want to nitpick ... black birdseye maple wood around the shifter is not fully sticking down now.
Plastic around the front seats creak.
oh yeah in the instrument cluster one of the lights on the far right went out.

Honestly ... thats it.

My 2002 E55 has only about 36K miles and it was bought new in October 2001. No major problem at all and the last repair was done in the spring for a leaking A/C pipe. Other wise it is a very solid car. IMHO better build than my other E55(2006).

Instrument cluster pixels failing, cluster replaced under warranty. Motor mount, but due to the stress of supercharging I'm sure. RUST!!! I had the trunk lid repaired under warranty due to rust near the license plate frame. I had the MAF sensor replaced once, but that was probably not necessary, just something HPS tried to get my car to run right with their SC. I am still mystified about these cars rusting, but I have to agree that my '06 isn't half the car the W210 was (6 trips for problems so far at only 4400 miles!). No other commonly reported W210 problems such as dash cracks, window regulator failure, fuel tank sending unit (but my E430 did have that once), or steering rack. I miss her.

I didn't have too many problems with mine when I had it. The motor mounts did need replacing, but, it was done under warranty.

I have a 2001 E55 with 92K miles. I have replaced the MAF sensor recently, and some of the pixels are dead on my cluster.

There are a couple of rust spots that are developing around the rear bumper and one of the rear door jambs.

I think the rotors need to be replaced because they pulse when I stop, and every once in a while the Brake Assist warning light gets tripped, but I can reset it by turning the car off and then back on.

Seems pretty solid so far, but I've only had it for 10K miles.

Quality of construction seems to be far inferior to our 1997 BMW 540i, though.

2000 E55

2000 E55 bought In April 2005 w/ 62,000miles and 2 year warranty, A Must!
Car now has 75,000miles Replaced:
1. Both lower ball joints
2. A/C hoses
3. steering rack (squeeked at low speeds)
4. P/S pump (leaked)
5. MAF sensor
6. drivers side AIR adaptive seat control
7. Child seat safety sensor

Love the car! The last two items were just annoying me. But very glad I bought the warranty, cost of policy was recovered with the first repair (P/S pump, and steering rack). I would buy another 2000-2002 E55 in a heart beat, prob. silver though!

Yeah, like I told you in the other thread.... W210 is very solid. I know I'm an outlier... but my trips to the dealer in the past 6 years for W210 repair is much less than my W211 in the first 3 months

Mercedes does make a steering rack rebuild kit. It includes all the internal O rings that fail. I remeber when the 210 was still in warranty Mercedes would not allow us to do a complete rack without trying the rebuild kit first. Ask your dealer about it depending on whats wrong with it mercedes actually makes alot of seperate parts on the rack.. Good luck

Rebuilt Steering rack 2000 E55

Mercedes rebuilt my steering rack, and replaced the powersteering pump ($375part) for $2400 @ $95.00/hour. So unless they broke something when removing the rack they should be able to rebuild for less than $3000. I would guess $2000, based on my experience!

Good Luck!

Bought a 2002 E55, nothing major ever needed repair up to the 50k miles I had on it when I traded for my 2006. I had a few wonky issues with the CD player not working intermittently, and the right rear window not wanting to roll up, but both problems were fixed under warranty.

Very solid car, I have fond memories, I do kind of miss her.

We recently had a 00 E55 with 161,000 miles on it and it engine was in great shape. It was in need of front shocks and ball joints but considering the mileage and the customer telling he has never had the front shocks replaced i would say thats pretty good.
