Removed resonator on my 63 (sound clip inside)

Just got it done today. Did this purely for sound so I don't expect any performance increase.

Pretty satisfied with the result...

As I rolled out the shop I'm kinda dissapointed coz it sounds about the same as before but as I travel a bit more then it started to growl. Right now it's making that 'machine gun' noise that the 55s made...

Make a quick sound clip with whatever you have.

Nice....a modded E63. That is where I began!! That car sounds pretty ballsy anyway, so the resonators out must be nice. You go straight pipes, or connect them?

2006 SL65 ///AMG - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: 2005 E55; 2002 ML55; 2001 CLK55; 1992 BMW 850i; 1991 M5
Advice!?!? (Kinda' Long)

I am hoping some of the brainier board members can chime in on this. I have been dying to remove the resonator on my E55 since I got it just for a bit more ballz. I did this to my BMW 850 - which I kow is a totally different animal - and it turned out great. Not too loud, but almost sounds like a Ferrari. I used a Magnaflow X-pipe in place of the center resonator and left the stock manifolds and cats. I went with an X-pipe because the center resonator on the 850 was an open chamber design that equalized exhaust flow from the left and right banks. (I am presuming the center resonator in the E55 is a similar design?) I heard alot of anecdotal input from the BMW board that I would loose torque - gain torque - loose HP - gain HP - you get the point. If anything, I think the 850 felt a bit more responsive down low, and it needs all the help it can get! It SURELY didn't hurt anything. I have read that with a forced induction motor, you don't run near the risk of loosing valuable low-end torque from messing with exhaust back-pressure that you do with an N/A motor. Also, I have read - and it makes sense - that the real restriction in the factory E55 exhaust is from the cats forward and the car really won't respond one way or another to tweaking around behind the cats. SO: here's the deal, I am hoping someone with more real mechanical inclination than I have can say: "You wont hurt a thing by removing your resonator and an X-pipe more faithfully replicates the factory flow than separated straight pipes." Am I on the right track?? Any input greatly appreciated.

wow, if my 55 sounded like that, I would be happy, but it sounds tame. I got an eisenmann race ordered though.

Are you planning on doing anything else besides just installing your eisenmann exhaust? I mean are you planning on deleting the resonators or takin out a pair of cats?? If you are just going to install the race muffler, please post a sound clip as I would like to hear the exhaust with just the exhaust itself and everything else intact. TIA

Well right now I've removed the resonators so I assumed when it's time to install the exhaust the resonator won't be there...

As for removing cats, if I'm not satisfied with the volume level I might do that...

If that was directed at me, I plan on just doing the exhaust for now, drive around a few weeks and decide if I want more sound.

If you're in socal, we can meet up so you can hear it. Me posting a video would get me in trouble since I've been asked many times to convert video clips of the baby, and never did it. If I do one of my exaust before the baby.....

Hopefully I get it before the end of the month. HURRY UP NEAL!!!!!!!!!

So as of right now you are stock. Then you will do the eisenmann exhaust and see whether or not you want more sound??? Please hit me up when you get the exhaust done. I am in socal and would love to hear the exhaust as is without anything else taken out or put on. That way I know what it sounds like if I were to get it and not do anything else...

Maybe we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. People have been wanting to hear my car too so maybe we can both do our vid at the same time if ya wants...

But please let me know once you get it. I want to hear an eisenmann race by itself with nothing else...thanks again

bone stock performance wise. I'll send you a PM when I get it done, and we can meet up. I will most likely just be done with just the exhaust. The car is leased, and I dont want to mess with the cats or resonator just in case I get drama if I turn it in.

If you're willing to do the vid, Im all game!

Keep Me In The Loop!

Benzboi and psk145 - please keep me posted on your thoughts regarding the Eisenmann Race system on an E55 with an otherwise stock exhaust. I am gathering that removing the resonator may be an exercise in futility as it already flows extremely well and offers little if any restriction, so I am really interested in how the Eisenmann swap alone will sound on this car. When I did the X-pipe on my 850, I also installed an Eisenmann Race system at the same time. Tough to really know what effect each mod had on the overall sound, though I am pleased with the combination and final result. I will say, Eisenmann is probably the prettiest, highest quality, best sounding system out there. I've got it on my 850 and I had it on my CLK55. Couldn't have been happier.

Mogz, seems like you have an artist's eyes. I liked the lighting in that video and the pictures in your sig. Got more of your works?

Im not as technically inclined as most of the members here, but I had my resonators replaced with straight pipes and I love the difference it made. At first, there was little change in exhaust note, but after a while it opened up quite nicely. Its not a big difference, but it adds a subtle gargle and a little "umph" at low RPMs. At WOT it seems to just allow the car to open up a little more - sound wise - and really howl. As far as I can tell there was no change in power. It is typical for my car to sometimes feel a liiiittle weak and sometimes feel a little strong (I dont know if this is abnormal or not) but as far as the resonator delete is concerned, I don't think it had any impact on overall performance. Hope this helps.

Great idea! Did it involve cutting, or just unbolting?
My E63 sounds pretty good from the outside already, but way too muted on the inside.
How much difference do you notice inside when you step on it? How about steady state cruising at 60-80 mph - any resonances/droning?
