E63 Brake Squeal

I have an E63 with 1400 miles on it and a very loud brake squeal when braking at anything less than moderate brake force. Is anyone else having the same issue and how was it rectified?

Common problem with the composite pads. Mine does the same thing, I just learn to deal with it.

At dealerships we apply anti-squeal compound to the pad and grease the back of the backing plate and it usually does a pretty good job of eliminating noises. But that won't be covered under warranty...so if you really want it resolved just bug the dealership and they may put new pads in (with them coated with the anti-squeal compound). Benz makes it a pain in the *** to warranty pads due to noise, though, so good luck.

My G squeaks like a Metro bus. And you're right, Merc are no help whatsoever.

No squeal from my brakes after 1700 miles.

Constant squeal from the kids in the back seat.

Hey Mike!

Let us know what happens. I never made it to the dealership but after speaking to one of the Service Advisors, they pretty much told me there isn't anything to do other then pay for the anti-squeaking stuff...which he said doesn't always work either.

I absolutely HATE this about MB cars as I feel it's the majority of their cars that have this problem! Here is a thread I started about this last week btw so keep us posted on what works so our EXPENSIVE luxury cars don't continue sounding like the poor brakes on the PUBLIC BUSES!!!!!! Do you hear us MB...WE HATE YOUR BRAKES! THIS IS PATHETIC AND UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Sorry for the rant!
Nick

Nick:

My car has now been in the shop for 3 days and they need another to complete the 1000 mile check and clean up a few issues on the car. I did have the car over the weekend and had close to 200 squeak free (well maybe not completely) miles before it started coming back. However, it was certainly better for a couple of days.

I am advised by my service guy that the squeak is normal however, based on some of the comments received, and discussions with a few other MB owners, this problem does not seem to be universal. I was told that the squeak would go away as the brakes heat up but I have not yet seen this. My car's squeak is actually worse than a MetroBus and closer to an old, rusting, oil leaking, bashed up dumptruk! Hopefully it will get better. I had the service department re-list the squeaking brakes as an outstanding issue that needs to be rectified. I will hopefully have the car back on Tuesday.

I will let you know how we progress.

Mike

Thanks for that update Mike! Keep us posted and hopefully if enough of us complain, MB will be forced to change their setup for future cars. Does anyone know if BMW, Audi and the like have these issues with their brakes? I haven't heard as many complain about it as I do here.

No brake squeal here either at 1350 miles. Will keep my fingers crossed and 'keep an ear out' for such. Keep us posted.

In addition to the E63, I have a 2004 BMW M3 with absolutely no brake squeal. Prior to purchasing the E63, I drove four M5's and none on them squeaked. The E63 brakes on my car are absolutely embarassing! I will continue to press MB and I intend to continue returning the car for service so long as the brake squeal continues......I live close to the dealer!

Really!? So how do you manage to get through a fast-food drive through? You apply the gas and then slam on your brakes throughout the drive through? It's a little unrealistic to expect to brake harder ALL of the time. I have recently been doing 60mph to 0mph runs at least twice a week, thinking this would help...it didn't do anything! After thinking that I'm simply going to wear out my brakes much sooner I stopped. If we're given the line of crap from MB that this problem exists simply b/c we have "high performance brakes" - then why don't the other car manufacturers have this problem?

My car is back from the dealer, although the brakes were better between visits, I did re-list the problem. Well, they cleaned the brakes, worked the rotors (to get rid of any slick areas???) and now thay are back to making the good-old-noise. I will ride them for a while and see where we go with this. As discussed in a previous post, the M3 and M5's do not do this and I assume they have "high performance" brakes as well.

I agree with Nick.

try cleaning the pads and rotors if they are glazed. Do a few stops from 60/70 to 30mph, about 3 times. See if that helps.

I am back in the shop this week.....cleaning the rotors gives me 15 miles of quiet stopping power in city driving. It seems to me that the problem may be related to brake dust however, I will leave it up to MB to confirm the issue and come up with a solution. I will not accept the screaming brakes that I have found on my E63 AMG.

Wow, you guys are really having some trouble getting those pads replaced. I knew it was difficult but geez, it sounds like it's damn near IMPOSSIBLE for you guys.

"high perf brakes"? i have a small brake squeal as well but it doesn't bother me that much. I'd much prefer to have the brake squeal on my Porsche Turbo with ceramic brakes stop squealing. Seems like maybe this is a somewhat common problem with ceramic/composite brakes? What's interesting is that the Turbo brakes have virtually no brake dust (not that I can see) vs. what everyone seems to be seeing from the E63.

There is a ton of dust coming off the E63 brakes. I need to wipe down my wheels daily to keep them looking good!

Don't have a Mercedes right now...
I hate to brake it on you guys but according to tirerack's website (http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/tech/....jsp?techid=86 see Autocross/Track) brake description, in high performance breaks...quote "With the increase in ultimate stopping power can also come a significant increase in required pedal pressure, pad and rotor wear, noise and brake dust – none of which are desirable during every day driving."

My breaks produce break dust and little bit of noise too. However, I wouldn't trade the stopping power I get with anything else!!! I don't care if it squels or not. Do you know why...? Last Sunday I drove the the Euro meet in Miami. When I left the place, driving on US-1 around ~50mph 4 cars in front of me started crashing one behind the other. Not only my car stoped faster than them, but I was actualy letting go little by little to give room to the car behind me not to hit me! Some research I did some time ago 60-0 in my car comes at ~112ft. That is better than a 1996 Ferrari 355, 2005 Acura TL, 2006 Lexus IS350 etc. I couldn't find another 4-door car that had the same 60-0. The 60-0 on the 2004 Corvette Z06 by the way is ~117ft according to an article in the internet : (http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...vette_feature/)

The breaks on my car is one of the attributes that I WILL NEVER COMPLAIN about !!

"Brake"= the part of a vehicle that slows it down or stops it

"Break"= to damage something, to disobey a rule or law, to end a period of silence etc etc

Good to hear the C43 OEM brakes are still well up to the task. My brakes squeak and it's annoying but I agree I'd rather that than have a crash. I had to slam them on on the 10 freeway the other day and was relieved the idiot on their phone behind was in a brand new S-class or my trunk would've been hatchbacked.

I don't think any of us here are complaining about the stopping power of our brakes but WHY do they squeak SO bad when this doesn't seem to be a common problem with other makes (i.e., BMW, Audi) which by the way, also seem to have better stopping power? So some of those cars stop in a shorter distance and I don't recall brake squeal being an issue for them.

I have just been through this irritating sequence of brake squealing. After two visits to the dealership, one for a cleaning and another to replace the pads, I finally went back to my dealership in Lindon, UT, yes, Lindon UT, home of the mod-friendly service department. I can't give these guys enough props. The service tech, Ken Robinson, really knows his stuff. Without question, they replaced my rotors and the pads again and Ken took my car out to "seat" the rotors properly. He did several passes from 30 mph to 0 and then several 60 mph to 0. That did it. No more squealing...at all. The other two times my squealing reemreged after about 50 miles. I now have over 600 since the repair. I love these guys!

So...if you can't get to Lindon UT, tell your dealer to "man up" and replace the rotors, pads and seat the new rotors properly. If they don't know how, have them call Ken at (801) 222-4400.

Are you the guy who bought the black E63 from ASC around 10/28/06?
