1 foot of fresh snow can't stop the mighty E55 with Blizzak. This is the first time I have snow tires on any of my AMG, and amazingly it handles quite well. Of course no lead-foot allowed during the winter driving season.

dude, you hardly got any snow on the street. We call that dusting around here
Just kidding. I got to give it to MB, the ESP is fantastic and kept my car well under control most of the time.

I dont know if the W210s came with archaic ESPs but I slip and slide quite a bit. In fact, I cant get the car up the rather steep slope up the hill so I have to drive out back through another street and come downhill to park. Here's some pics of me driving home from dinner:

Benz recommends you do switch it off in snow conditions to let the tires slip a little and "bite" thru the snow to get traction.
Remember, when you turn off ESP all you're doing is turning off the throttle control it has. You'll still have a traction control system but it won't be able to cut the throttle back.

Thanks glassjaw. Since you have a 210, what tires do you recommend? I notice that with my aftermarket rims the previous owner had put on, all 4 tires are the same width. Would I be able to go back to OEM spec (275 Rear 245 Front) on the same rims or do I need a new set of rims do you think?

You can't go wrong with Michelin PS2's. But I don't have any experience with them in snow so you might want to get some other opinions on their winter traction. If I were you I would try to go back to the OEM 245/275 set-up but it depends on the rim sizes as well. Did the previous owner tell you why he decided to go the same sizes all the way around??
