Is the 2006 steering rack still as bad as the 2004?

I sold my 2004 in December and just hate the car I have now.

I did not like the unresponsive steering system that required me to turn the steering wheel like I'm driving a tractor. The 2006 CLS55 has a great steering rack that is very reponsive and fast. I think the 2006 E55 uses the same one but am not sure.

Who knows if 2006 is better than 2004?

The '06 does have the identical rack to the '06 CLS. I had an '05 and now an '06 and the difference is MASSIVE, but i love handling.

I have an 04 and swapped out the rack for an 06 CLS rack -- much better- quicker turn in (15% or so I hear).

From what build date did the racks change - any clues ?

According to an email I got directly from AMG, from July 2004 production all
E55's have the "10% faster steering racks" like the one in the CLS.
There is no difference between MY05 and MY06 racks.

Some of the older MY05's that came to the States still has the older steering rack.

Also, there was a guy on the board that changed out the front AIRMATIC suspension for the CLS ones, which are said to be stiffer.

In trying to get the steering rack replaced under warrenty, do you know what types of noises I could say is occuring so that they would replace it? I do get some noises, sorta like a grinding noise when i prepare to make a left turn.....
