W212 engine information
It is very hard to guess what Mercedes will put in their next generation E-Class given it is still very early in the game. Don't depend on what a magazine claims yet. I read 4 different magazines with 4 different guesses: one magazine claimed a mild turbo boost version making 570 hp, another claimed naturally aspirated 544 hp, another claimed 525 hp, and the one you mentioned above stated that the current 507 hp will stay the same.
From what I understand, Mercedes and AMG want to maintain a 3 to 4 year AMG engine cycle (I'm thinking they'll aim for 3 years and endup at 4 years). The 55k engine lasted from 2003 to 2006 (4 years). So, I'm guessing that the 63 engine will be with us for 2007, 2008 and 2009. Then 2010, only two possible outcomes:
Option 1) Improve the current NA engine and give it more hp.
Option 2) Go with the twin turbo route to add the extra power.
In either case, we are almost GUARANTEED a newer, better, more POWERFUL, and more sophisticated engine...
I have a feeling they will go E63 Twin Turbo...
Here are some of the links of the different articles:

1) This is the Australian Magazine that predicts AMG will have two versions of the twin turbo engine. Please scroll down to see the scanned image.

2) This is an article from WorldCarFans.com claiming a NA 544 hp for the upcoming W212 AMG engine.

Here is a direct quote: The next E-Class will offer a wide selection of petrol engines ranging from a 4 cylinder 184 HP to an 8 cylinder with 544 HP and the diesel's ranging from 4 cylinder 136 HP to an 8 cyl. 354 HP. However, customers will have to wait for a full hybrid version another couple of years, it will not come on the market before 2010.
3) Then of course there is the link you provided above claiming the 63 engine will remain unchanged.

Not sure how this affects your 3-year engine cycle scenario, but 2003 to 2006 is four years. And since the 55K is available in some 2007 models, it's now five years.

My guess, if anything they will go or a supercharged 63 engine.
In one of my Autoweek mags a few months they interviewed the head of engine developement at AMG and he stated that the 63 engine has about another 50 horsepower available if they can solved intake and exhaust restriction problems.

AMG engine cycle information
I think MB and AMG will start aiming for a 3 year cycle. There will always be a couple of exceptions here and there for certain models, but for most other models they'll try to change the engine every 3 years (maybe 4). I believe all the 55k engines have been upgraded to the 63 except for SLR, SL55, and the G55. I know they won't touch the SLR for a while. As for the G-Class, I heard the G63 will come out mid 2008. Don't know what they're planning for the SL? Does anybody know?

Looking at the current 63 engine, it looks like a supercharger setup like the E55K is a possibility. I can't think of why you would put the throttle body in the back. It looks like planning ahead to me.
