In Manual mode fuel cuts at 6800 in 1st gear.

Hey guys,

I just got an E63 and found that in first gear and only in Manual mode the fuel cut is limited to only 6800 RPM, and the dash turns red and asks for an upshift before between 4500-5000 RPM. If I leave it in S it doesn't hit the fuel cut off in first but still wont shift at redline instead around 6700 RPM.

I don't know for sure if it's a fuel cut but it feels like a very violent hesitation as if the revs just hit a wall. Remember this only happens in 1st gear in Manual mode.

Does anyone else see this? or maybe somethings wrong with mine?

In Manual mode you need to hit the paddles to upshift otherwise you will hit rev limiter.

If you are hitting the paddle you need to do it sooner because of the electronic delay. Use S mode instead.

i noticed that on the 63 also, they dont let you get anywhere near 7k in first in s mode, dunno about M, but sounds reasonable considering its behaviour in S

they might be trying to preserve the tranny

Cool

My 63 does the same thing. Run it in sport and if you want to launch hold the left paddle for a couple seconds and you will be in first gear.

I just wanted to make sure this was normal before doing any mods to the car. I don't want MB telling me that a simple ECU upgrade is messing things up or something.

It is unfortunately normal and I don't think there is a way around it. Just had my engine software updated to start in 1st at all times and the issue still persists. Shifts in S and C are definitely better though. If anyone doesn't have it yet, get it from the stealership...

Would you possibly have the invoice still that lists the Update version?

My invoice didn't list a version. Take it in and tell them that the car doesn't start out in 1st gear while in "S" mode.

I'll do that. I just remember trying to get updates I was informed of perfomed to my older Volvos ECM and the dealer usually looked at me like I was crazy until I forced them to hook the car up to the terminal and check the ECM via satellite from Sweden, then they found all the required updates.

I just had the updated software and it does indeed shift at roughly 6,700rpm in 1st gear in any mode. Other gears though shift at redline.

What is the build dates of your vehicles? I have not experienced the problem and my car starts in 1st gear. I have an 11/06 build. When I punch on it in first gear it goes past 7,000 before the built in lag.

Good to know. My build date is 8/06. Had the tranny/ME reflash and car is fine. Seems that MB dealers have the ability to program the tranny at the dealers. Kind of like the aftermarket tuners. Interesting, don't you think?
Even though I am happy with the reflash, it still seems the car is trying to 'find' its perfect rhythm. Wish I could spend a day at the dealer testing and tuning.

..........I wonder if this has to do with the low torque limit of the 7 speedtransmission. Perhaps MB is purposefully trying to protect the transmission. Otherwise it makes no sense since this is supposed to be a high revving V8 monster.
