Thinking about trading the E55 for a SL55 or CLK63 Convertible: Opinions
I have been thinking lately of getting a convertible car. I really enjoy the E55, but I have always wanted an SL. My wife really wants to get a convertible and I told her if I made a change it could only be an AMG. I am thinking about a 2005+ SL55 or the new 2007 CLK63. I know that although that the straight line performance between all three is comparable, the E55 has a lot more potential as far as mods go. I don't really race the car around. I just like the knowing the power is there and I definitely dip into the throttle a lot. What do you guys think?

I wonder what the measured noise level is inside of both models.
I would guess that the SL would be quieter (a plus) and that it would be more responsive to mods.
Some say that the build quality is better in the SL because it's a top of the MB line model.
I'm struggling with selling my CL and moving to the SL myself.

If you do like the performance aspect of the E55 (and of course I know its not a track car) then you will find the flexibilty of the CLK chasssis to be very disappointing. On the Lime Rock course the CLK63 convertible felt very, very different to every other car on the track that day - E55/E63, CLS63, SL55, SLK55. Can only attirbut it to the soft top (Sl adn SLK seem to have much stiffer chassis. Just my $0.02

Thanks to everyone for your opinions. I went to the dealer today to look at the CLK63 AMG. I decided that I definitely would want the SL55. The SL65 is a bit much for me. The question becomes is it worth the extra bucks for the style of the SL55

you mean paying extra for a 65 cf. a 55??? Depends how much?
if you mean SL55 vs CLK63.........no contest - they should cost roughly the same if the 55 is used and the 63 new.

I've had both and if I didn't need four doors and four seats there would be no choice. Everything about the SL is superior to the E. Don't get me wrong, I love my E55 but as soon as it's the wife's turn to drive the four door the E will be replaced by another SL.
