Dyno Mode: Any problems using full time?
Hey guys,
I am switching my car to dyno mode and was curious if there were any serious issues with leaving it in that setting all the time? I understand that ESP and ABS will be turned off, which is a plus to me. Does dyno mode disable any other features?
Personally, I can't stand how quickly the ESP back comes on in corners even after switching it off. Is there another method of fully defeating ESP without putting the car in dyno mode?
Thanks in advance
Tony

i've heard enough stories and verified it myself that the tranny will go into it's own limp mode if you run in dyno mode for long periods. basically the tranny locks itself into a gear after too much driving and you have to turn off dyno mode to reset it.
that's about all i can tell you.

Airbags do not work and the tranny does take some extra time to shift about.
Explain your issues. I can get mine sideways and it still doesn't take over (if I have ESP off). Keep in mind that the tires size you are running has much to do with it. If you have aftermarket wheels with larger diameters, then the ESP kicks in sooner. I am actually running 0.5% smaller than Oem, so the car lets more spin before it kicks in.
Are you trying to drift or just go fast?

My goal is to have more fun with my e55 in the corners. Whenever I drive aggressively in my car into corners with ESP off, the computer still comes on and flashes the ESP light when I push it hard.
Also, if I try to power oversteer around corners and try my best drifter impersonation, the computer reigns in the fun and turns on stability control quite early. I cannot get my car sideways freely. However, I can get sideways a little, but cannot circulate sideways around even half of a 360 degree circle/corner.

I do have 20" wheels with 245/30 and 285/25 tires. However, are very close within the same overall diameter as the OEM tires.
My wheels
245/30/20 = 25.78" O.D.
285/25/20 = 25.61" O.D.
OEM wheels
245/40/18 = 25.72" O.D.
265/35/18 = 25.30" O.D.
What do you think my problem is? I have a 2005 E55.
Thanks
Tony

Vadim, but would this resolve the ESP issue? I agree a limited slip with an aggressive locking split would help traction considerably, but how about times when I just want to be a hooligan and drift sideways around corners? Thanks.

DO NOT DO IT WITH YOUR CAR! Use a dealer loaner to expeirment. I was given a C240 6 Speed and had it in Dyno mode. Well a few beers at lunch and I thought I was in my Z06 and locked the tire going into a fast right hand sweeper. I lock the wheels up and brought it up over a curb. $6,000 experment gone sour. DO NOT DO IT IN YOUR CAR. ONLY BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN.

These Mercedes 'street cars' are developed, tuned, and serviced to provide 'average owner' a Very Smooth, non-jarring, non jolting, non jerking driving experience, that gives one a feeling of total competence, safety, and predictable control. 'Drifting,, hanging tail out, burnouts, etc are not included within their normal driving capabilities.
THEY ARE DESIGNED TO ALWAYS HAVE ALL THE SAFETY FEATURES FUNCTIONING. LIMITED 'turn off' of SOME safety features are designed into 'DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS ONLY to allow testing of certain capabilities. It would require a lot of 'module level' re-programming (serious hard core stuff) to 'turn off' the various, inter-connected safety systems (some of which are mandated by our Federal Dept of Transportation) to 'allow' these 'out of normal control' conditions. The manufacturers and service business, by law, cannot implement or allow Owners' to easily defeat or 'turn off' ' Federal mandated Safety Features. Federal law does not allow the Diagnostic Mode tests to be used in Normal Driving--they MUST automatically turn-back to NORMAL after a very short time of operation. I would not be surprised that some day soon the DOT will mandate use of a 'special limited ID token' issued only to "federally licensed 'mechanics," to activate any 'non-normal'' or 'diagnostic mode' of operation.

All I know is when I turn my ESP off, it's off. I can do anything and it never kicks in. Cheerios, drifting and all.
