Born and raised. Pulled for 77 in a 55 last week. No ticket. It's funny to see outsiders opinions, Fairfax County blows dead bear but usually for other reasons besides the cops. And the Maryland Troopers are a h*ll of a lot meaner than Va. Troopers. But I have been down the 1/4 mile at MIR a couple hundred times in cars and on bikes. It's a good track and they prep it well. It has real teeth when they lay down the traction compound. There is no shade though and it gets hot. Avoid the food at the 1320 Cafe.

 

You can always buy a can of burnout guard and spray the panels before you race, it makes it way easier to wipe off afterwords.

Yeah! I subscribed to this thread to follow it thinking I might try to get a babysitter and sneak down there to La Plata. It's about an hour and a half drive for me but it's nice cruising. The old one-off C35 has done 13.6@103.9 there but my G-TECH says she's running 2 tenths slower right now and I don't know why. I'd bring my bike but you guys would blow that away too! That's only run a 13.4 at MIR. But I am going to try to be there. Can you pay at the track or does it have to be pre-paid?

You have to prepay because all the spots will be filled before then.

BTW, Fairfax is by far the worst. Maryland will not put someone in jail for going 90 in a 65. Fairfax will in a heartbeat. Reckless is not a misdemeanor in MD and does not stay on your record for 11 years. It also doesnt carry any civil fines. I dont see how you think MD is worse. You are the first person I've ever heard say that MD is worse. Just sit by the GW bridge and watch people cross into MD, everyone goes faster as soon as you cross the bridge. Its the opposite going into VA.

 

I can't disagree with you, I moved out of there as soon as I could. The xtra $1,000 traffic fine was just enacted in July. The traffic and taxes are beyond belief.

Yep,that works too.I spray the inside of the wheel weels with armorall,and the lower bumper panels with spray detailer wax.It all comes over very easy anyway.Just wipe your lower bumper cover panels off after each run,no biggie.

 

Not worse, I just think MD state troopers are meaner than VA state troopers. But for traffic, I agree, VA sucks.

I've been asked to find a nice hotel in the area for everyone to stay. I dont think there is a "nice" hotel anywhere near MIR. I live 80 miles away from MIR. I will look into different hotels and pricing and let you guys know what I come up with.

Just in case nobody has put these up yet, here are a few tips and tricks from what I have learned running at MIR. For those of you who are familiar with the drag strip this primer won't be very helpful. But for those running for the first time, I hope some of these nuggets help.

0. Rule zero is not optional: drive it like you stole it, or drive it like you hate it. Babying your baby at the track is a waste. Don't go if you can't bring yourself to really beat on it. It's a Benz, it can take it and you WILL be quicker.

1. Turn off ESP. If you leave with tons of wheels spin and ESP on it will usually fall on its face at about 10'. If you happen to be lucky enough to have an AMG you may be better off with ESP on and letting the AMG speed shift programming quench the big spin.

2. If you are launching hard and getting a lot of spin try letting 5 or 10 lbs. of air out of your back tires (run 20 to 25 lbs). The wider footprint will hook you up better and doesn't cost too much down the track where a little more traction ads up to additional friction.

3. Launch is everything and your 60' time will dictate what you get down the track. If I run a 2.0 60' I'll do a 13.6, if I do a 2.2 I'll run a 13.8, it's almost directly proportional. Most tracks use traction compound, and MIR uses a lot and has real teeth sometimes, so you will have extra hook-up off the line--more than on the street--so launch harder than you would from a stoplight.

4. If you have an automatic you should launch from a powerbrake. Stage shallow (far back, stop immediately after the "staged" light goes on) and hold your left foot on the brake and your right over the gas. Run it up to 3K quickly and then snap off the brake on the last yellow and mash it past the passing button on the floor. If you spin for 20' that's OK. Sometimes you have to spin to be quick. If you have a mega motor AMG and spin for 100' then launch get on the gas a little slower--keeping some spin but not a smoking burnout--and see #2.

5. If you have a 6-speed then stage deep (close to the trip lights) and run up the RPMs to 3K and feather the clutch out quickly keeping some spin. Practice launching soft and hard and look at the 60' times. Try to get a 1.8 or better seconds 60' time.

6. Drive it through the lights, don't let off until you are well past the traps at the end.

7. Cool it down between runs. Pop your hood. Even ice down the intake if you can. Put a fan on it, whatever you can to get the heat out from underneath the hood.

8. Eat lots of air. Do an air box or at least a K&N or Green filter for the track. Making power down the track requires a high velocity of air coming into the intakes. Cold air is better by far.

9. If you are lucky enough to have a manual then powershift it. See rule zero. It's worth a tenth or even two! No lift shifting is the quickest way down the track. Practice around town. Remember that your tranny can take a little powershifting and even has some RPM sweet spot where it synchs up well and won't make too much racket. Really bang through the gears.

10. Get your car prepared for the track. Ge there with a 1/4 tank, get rid of that subwoofer and the kid's car seats. Leave the spare at home, even use a racing battery. Weight is lost power, lose 100 lbs and it's like making an extra 10hp. Run race gas or a can of 104+ octane booster too. Run on worn tires (not bald though). Brand new tires cost you noticeable horsepower at higher speeds.

 

Nice tips! I have to disagree with a few. Most AMG's cant be launched at 3k rpm (If they can even hold the car still at that rpm). I know a few people who dont turn of their ESP and cut very good/consistent 60's (I am no tone of em). 60' is much more important than the equal decrease in time that you mentioned. The rule of thumb is for every tenth you cut off the 60' you get 1.5-2 tenths on the big end. So master the launch! This is why we have a rental, so you can practice your launch and get it down right! There is a gas station across the street from MIR that sells ice (I remember it being overpriced so ill see what I can do about bringing cooler; Obviously I cant bring enough for 50 cars).
