E55 then E63, now back to an E55
OK need some advice - heres the deal w an oil change on E55. Had an independent do the change a few days ago, new filter and drained every drop of oil out, but retained the same drain plugs. Filled w exactly 9 Qts. I am now hearing that the motor keeps a quart or so of oil in circulation that doesn't get drained. SOO.... originally my electronic oil meter (no dipstick here) said "oil level ok"..... today it says "reduce oil"
What should I do? Thanks......
What should I do? Thanks......

Now the E55K has two plugs that are one time use only, so you will need to bring that up with your indie too. The plugs may take a few days for a leak to show up cause it has to fill the belly pan under the engine. So keep an eye on this as it makes quite a mess under the car, you may get lucky and they may hold.

Now check it when the engine is hot. Nine quarts of oil will displace 9.5 quarts @ 180 degrees. So if the oil level indicator says "over fill" when the engine is hot you need to go back to your indie and remove .5 (half) quart.
Other than that keep an eye on the drain plugs for signs of leakage, or better yet drop by your indie and have him lift the car and drop the belly pan and check it. I would think if it was going to leak it would be evident by now.
When doing an oil change it is best to check the level before the last 2 quarts are added, because it is much easier to add oil than to remove it.

Good suggestion. It's very easy to not see the forward drain plug if you're not aware it's there. The vast majority of engines use a single drain plug, so it's likely the mechanic didn't drain the forward sump. If he added 9 qts. and didn't drain the front sump, you'd definitely be in an overfill situation. I advise purchasing the factory dipstick tool and confirming the actual oil level rather than relying on the electronic gauge. There's a reason that MB makes the tool available to its service facilities.

On my 06 cls 55 I can read the oil in quarts on the dyno screen while the engine is running. I know it takes 9 qts at fill up. The display indicates from 6.5 to 7.2 quarts. Since the engine is running, it will never display 9qts.
So, the question is-What is the normal display reading while running?
The oil level in the usual display indicates 'ok'.
I know the oil is done right since I'm the dumb guy that likes to toss $$ at the dealership.

On that service bulletin above, what does it mean "the oil can not be extracted due to the partitioned oil sump"?
Also, if they only drained from one main plug and didn't notice the front, how much oil would likely be left in the system? I.E. how much oil does hidden front plug area hold?
Thank you!

The pic depicts an 55K engine being reassembled the block is upside down and the pan is right side up. once the sealant is in place the pan will be flipped over and fastened. This pic is a good indicator of the volume of oil that would remain in the engine if the front pan was not drained. I would call it no less than 1 quart. For those of you that are familiar with windage trays you can see that above the partition there is little room for any excess oil.

Use Royal Purple 5w40 or 10w40 same spec to Mobil 1 0w40 is what AMG says to use (sponsorship and partnership with them) out outlast theirs in the lab test and use 8 quarts of it. Try it once or a lifetime!
