What should I Mod on '05 E55!?

Just procured a beautiful new (only 6500 miles!) 2005 E55 AMG. I'm new to MB and have been reading some of your blogs.... Any suggestions on what I can easily Mod on my new ride? I only have around 2 grand I wanna spend right now from finally selling my lieutenant-mobile. Any ideas? Chip it? Oh, bytheway, what is this K1, K2, LSD stuff all about and how much is it gonna cost? Sounds like a sidewalk sale from Woodstock! Thanks for the replies.

Post up some pics and give more details about what you want from your mods. What you use the car for, how, that type. My suggestion would be to have a realistic expectation and plan, or you will end up spending a ****load and end up wishing you had something else.

Here's some pics...

Jangy, Believe it or not, I drive the car about once a week to work and back (and 1mile roundtrip to the gym few times aweek). I wanna boost the HP abit without dumping a crapload of money. I'm wary of the underdrive pulley mod as it made my car run way too hot in PHX on my Mustang, although it did provide a noticeable pwr increase. Would love some new shiny headers but too pricey at this time. Any data on chipping it out? Also, I wanna put an XM (not Sirius) receiver in the car.... New airbox with KN's and larger dia. throttle body might be an easy (and cheaper) mod. I read a blog about dropping the front end 8/10 " by installing washers on the airmatic assembly...

Thanks for the input!

ASP pulley is the cheapest mod and the most noticable hp gain.About 800.00 plus install.I do the 80mm throttle body kits for 2500.00 installed.Header are around 3000+ depending on maker, plus install.

If your looking for a cheap and low daollar mod then the ASP pulley is your only choice. No ecu tune needed.ECU tune alone is around 1500.00.ECu tune alone is not worth the money.

Pulley is best bang for buck. ECU alone won't give enough. Another potential start is the TB, if you are weary of heat soak.

I'm wary of the underdrive pulley mod as it made my car run way too hot in PHX on my Mustang, although it did provide a noticeable pwr increase.

Same issue on these, but there are cooling solutions that help

Would love some new shiny headers but too pricey at this time.

A few people are working on sets for about $1500, so stay tuned.

Any data on chipping it out?

This will be debated to both extremes. I do not believe that chipping alone will do much at all (compared to the $$).

Also, I wanna put an XM (not Sirius) receiver in the car

Any stereo shop can do that, but it will NOT integrate with the OEM setup. You just tap it in.

New airbox with KN's

I love K&Ns, but none of the airboxes have shown any power gains.

Larger dia. throttle body might be an easy (and cheaper) mod.

BINGO!! I'm about to do that and I have no other mods, yet. Parts are about $1200 and it takes 3-5 hours of labor.

I read a blog about dropping the front end 8/10 " by installing washers on the airmatic assembly

Tis very true, but read up on it before you decide which way to go. There are 3 options: The washers, STAR, and ELM. You basically get what you pay for, so your choice. I have tried all three and love the ELM.

Thanks for the input!
Good luck!

Jrocket and jangy, thanks for the valuable info. I'll be searching for a good place to do the work here in PHX. The Dyno-Comp guys are big in RennTech but seem overly priced but then what do you expect from a Snottsdale group. Maybe Veloce.... just audibilizing my pontification.....

I would do the TB myself but not mess with the headers... above my paygrade on such an esoteric engine. I'll research the TB brands.

Jangy, what do I have to do to integrate the XM into my system, if possible? The Dealer wanted way too much money for both the receiver and the install. Thanks again for your input, Ken.

The cleanest option is to have the inputs added to the rear of the comand unit. Places, like NAV2TV do that work. It just adds analouge inputs into the setup. Most people just use a reciever and have the output feed into the car's setup. You get some volume control, but no channels.

The header install is an easier job than the TB.There is alot to the TB install, completely removing the SC and much more. Not for the everday guy to tackle in his garage.

The unit has to be lifted up and all the gaskets replaced. The headers can get tricky, too, depending on what you are doing. In some cases, you need to dismount the motor mounts to get them in.
