I´ve been hearing some mixed feelings about Renntech uopgrades, but most of them tell it´s a great option.
Kleeman and Evotech and lately Wetterauer, seems to have a good image among you V8 owners, can those who have made the upgrade give their opinion about it?
Now that the upgrades are on the market for quite some time, and you´ve been able to put some hard miles on the engine after the upgrade, imakes it a good time to talk about reliabily and ownership experience

J. I've been using Wetterauer mapping for a long time and they just get it done. After using others in vehicles I've raced and driven every day, they tune german vehicles for the real world. Probably get a bunch of flack from these guys but I'm speaking from experience.

Until now, I still haven't found an ECU tuner that is worth any money. The closest is Oliver at Evotech.
I'm one of the ones that hates RennTech. Don't fall into the same trap I did. Find a SHOP you trust and make sure they are top notch. Then, go with whatever they push. Customer Service is HUGE with these mods. I found that out the hard way. Make sure whomever you use is qualified to install it and that the tuner trusts them to do so.

I have a software company, plus I have been tweaking and testing on my own SL55 for 4 years, and reliability has been perfect....and people are saying our performance is great. Plus we stand behind what we do.

+1 on the customer service. If they seem indifferent to your questions or seem like they could live without your business at this point of the conversation, then I don't see them being very helpful if your car needs tweaking or needs service after the install.

Check out their shop and see if anybody on this forum has used them to get a feel for their interaction with their customers and the general quality of their work.

Good luck.

Anyway.....the throttle response is better....there is more HP/torque and the speed limiter is removed. Overall, a great choice to do.

I chose to go with speedtuning USA (www.speedtuningusa.com). It is an Austrian company that is just breaking into the US. Oliver is the proprieter....and is a great guy. He talked me through the process. I pulled the ECU on Mon...fedx it to him, and had it back in my car by Wed morning.

What I was looking for was the speed limiter removed...which they did....As a by-product I got another 40-50hp/40-50 lb ft of torque (or something like that). The car has been flawless, has topped out at 202/3 and embarrasses most everything at track days! And all for the grand total of $350...plus shipping. They are now offering a pulley upgrade for about $600 that'll give a bit more....but in reality.......does it really need more...........NO.

Have fun....be safe....and take a driver's school....that's probably the best auto performance investment you can make.
You went from "(or something like that)",too software company owner in no time at all.

Just a little over 2 years ago you were here asking where the ecu was located and then asking how to remove it!!

Keep trying with the BS sales pitches!

HAHA!! I was waiting for JRock to chime in when I saw the software company, just a few days after the doctor's office bit. Too funny.

To IngenereAMG:
I don't mind some cat trying to run a virtual shop, but I'd say to take responsibility for what you say and do. You say you back your work up, but the truth doesn't come out until **** actually hits the fan. Do you have malservice insurance? Build a rep and pay your dues. Boasting here won't get you any business. You saw where that got you on another forum. Just be honest, since the crowd will smell it out anyway. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm speaking from experience. I was on the customer end of it, but it is uncomfortable none the less. Lesson learned. Don't pretend to be "big time" if you aren't.

I've also been down this "pull out your ecu and send it to us fedex" oh and send us $1,500. Then we will send it back to you next day as soon as we "tweak" it. With an ECU tune, you can't do much more than change some settings that takes seconds, so why bend us over for $1,500.

What happened to doing some real work that takes some real hours??

Isn't Veloce tune around $2,200??? I thought that was a high when even comparing it to established tuners.

I still remember and miss my Audi, when anyone can get a chip for it for around $400 (GIAC chip). And I don't want to hear how more difficult the AMG engines are to tune, when on Audi you had much more mechanics to regulate on a turbo engine.

Also, back on Audi days there was a company that supposedly stole a code from another and went on to resell it (or so it was said). Wonder if this is possible for some MB tuners as well?

Sure it is. Not just for ECU tuning, but for anything that takes resources to develope. They get scared to get too deep into anything, because a knock off is just a purchase away.

I hate knock offs, although that subject always seems to bring controversy any time it is brought up.

Having said that, I'd love to know how some of the tuners here actually go about developing their software. On the GIAC chip for example, many of Audi crowd was convinced, since many witnessed the engineering that went into the software development.

I am too a little skeptical about shipping out my ECU while keeping the fingers crossed to a company of whose development process I know nothing about.

No doubt about it. I would only do an ECU tune if you truly need it and have a tuner you trust with it.
