SL 500 (R230) & S 65 AMG (W220)
New member asking advice on purchase!

Hey guys,

I've been reading along for some time now but never got myself to post anything, but however I am a real MB addict an would like to ask ya'll some advice.

I currently own a S 65 AMG (W220) and I got offered a great deal on a (very) lightly used E 55 AMG ('06), I has 5900 km on the odometer (about 3700 miles) and my dealer called me up and asked me if I was interested.

Because the E 55 and S 65 are two completely different cars, I would like to ask all you 55 AMG owners to help me check this car out, the milage is definatly low, but i have been told that the engine is pretty "raw" opposed to the 65.

Do you guys have a list of pointers what parts of the car I should give a good inspection to (Maybe a summary of points that the E 55 has problems with etc.), because i will be checking out this car thursday or friday this week, and it would be nice to know if it's a good car (Yes on the purchase) or just a "Blue-monday" car (in which case the purchase is off!)

I have tried searching the forum but could not find anything (Maybe this has to do with my complete lack of knowledge on how the search engine operates )

Thanks in advance!

'06 E55, '05 SLK55, a few others
Just get a vehicle history from the dealer. That'll tell you if it's a problem child or not. As far as the car goes, yes, the 55K motors are "rough" compared to any of the V12's. All have a distict "jerk" as the blower engages and it gets worse as you mod them. The off idle torque is great and they feel as quick as the V12's although that's not the case. A completely different feel than the 12's. Typical complaints are the brakes (SBC sucks), oil sensor failures are not unheard of, Pano roof rattles/squeeks are pretty common, and earlier cars had the "chirping" SC clutch that should not be an issue on an '06. I don't know if you'll like it or not coming from an S65. I'm actually considering the opposite trade to gain power, room, and smoothness.

Thanks for your reply, it's always hard to put your first post on a forum... will i get flamed, or not....

This is not the case, I will keep an ear out for the SC Chirp, when can i hear it best?

Concerning the E 55, i'm not downgrading, I have a SL 500 which i barely use, so I wanted to trade it in for the 55 and keep that as a "mod-friendly" car!

E55 AMG 2003
Wink

Choice is simple....

Age > 60 Go for S and sit in the back
Age < 60 Go for E and have fun driving....

Good luck

The chirp will come right around the 1-2 gear shift on moderate acceleration from a stop, but an '06 likely should not have the problem.

That's kind of true. I would say the E55 is fun for the run, the S65 is more sophisticated. E55 for the younger crowd, S65 for the more mature crowd.

MB, BMW
if your S65 still has low miles & isnt giving u trouble, i'd keep the S65, and get a porsche 997 turbo. that'll be a great stable imo.

I'm not losing the S 65 AMG, I'm getting rid of my SL 500!
