george is correct. To the question at hand I would agree that the driver and the track conditions are both very important. If you assume the same driver, running each car on the same lane back to back, I think even Juicee63 (who has a cls 63) would acknowledge that the E has an edge, being slightly lighter and perhaps more importantly running 18's vs the CLS's 19's. Heavier, bigger rims tend to slow you down. Its always funny watching a guy in a modified car with 20's run a slow time and get *****d about it. BTW, not to start a war, but a lightly modded E55 is faster than both but harder to launch. And they are much easier to lightly mod.

I spoke with one of the AMG techs at the S. Charlotte dealership about this exact topic. He said that even though the engines were basically they same they were geared slightly different. For that reason, he thought that the CLS would have just a slight edge.

Just like everyone else, I would like to find out first hand.

Anyone around the Charlotte, NC with a stock E55 or E63?

Given that the engines are the same, finding out may not prove a whole lot.

Let's see some close up pics of your ride.

Today at California speedway the CLS 63 was faster, LOL

On 9/21 the E63 was faster. I have raced many and it is decided in the first 330 as are most races featuring similarly powered vehicles.

Performance of both cars is almost identical in 0 to 60 as well as 1/4 mile.

It is definately a driver's race......

I thought Greg's car was the fastest stock 63 from a consistency point. One point you make that I need to focus on is the 60 and 330 feet. The times I did well there, I ran a higher trap, too.

I have a 12.77 slip @112.52 I thing Gregs best was 12.8@112.33.

Yeah his car was definately much faster than last time out, he listened to some keen advice.

my 12.72 which I ran against you after the cool down was the best stock ET of the day in a 63.

Just so you know and I love it that you are showing an interest, Mohammads car was the fastest 63 last time he ran a 12.59. Conditions were slightly better on 9/21.

Jangy your 60ft and 330 ft times were great, your car just seemed to flatten not terribly but no way should I have been pulling. Whats weird is your car did the same thing on all 54 runs? Hard to believe. Anyway , the race is usually , in a heads up me vs you race its won by cutting the better light(Leaving fast) and hooking. If you cut those .006 lights you will not be getting beaten very often by similar vehicles if ever.

You did have a great run on the very first after the ice bath. LOL, that was your best of the day. It was fun as crap going round and round with you while everyone else just sat. We didn't even have to wait. I'll post some vids.

Like I said before, these cars are close enough to be fun. No doubt about it. I agree my top end sucks. I will whoop your but in Nov. For now, I am taking the bumper off and finding a way to get cool air in there.

Before we get back to the regular macho talk, I do have to say again that the meet was an absolute blast and exactly what our meets should be about. We are doing more "ride" or "theme" meets on the other side and we should join some of these. I came to the drags to represent and I will continue to come. You all know I HATE drag racing. So, I would ask that some of your crew comes to a track meet (Big Willows) day with us is all.

Absolutely bro!! I wish more folks would come out , I am certain we could do a Willow day and the 63's will show. I think your tracking your car really helped you. Your car was squatting real nicely and you will get better. Your 60 ft will drop from 1.9x to 1.8 to 1.7....Like I said the race is usually won the first 60 feet. I definately will sink myself into your world, its ez we both love to compete and drive fast. I think you like drag racing more than you thought, I never thought a 55 could hot lap and not drop off and actually get faster, someone please explain this? Jangy even tried to keep going after tghey closed the staging lanes!!!obsessed. Nov 9th, mark it

Nothing to explain. Mine is a marathon BEAST!! I believe in beating the crap out of it on a particular event and seeing who stands at the end. Getting one good run in all day is just boring. I enjoyed the friendly meet, seeing some new rides, seeing other rides, racing you all, racing anything else, and SMOKING the tires on the burnouts!! Racing is racing. I prefer one over another, but in the end I love it all. I'd race you accross Yuma on Camels if it ended up that way.

You're pretty cool, dude. You should try to jump in on one of our routine weekly meets (although only the OC Crew is holding their own for now!!). I think you'd like it and fit right in. Jrock already goes, that rat.

That's not true, it's amazing how dull some techs are, I'm glad they just twist wrenches. The 7-speed is a STANDARDIZED gearbox across the entire 63 line, there is absolutely no difference in gearing between the E63 and CLS63. The gearboxes are exactly the same, unless there's a difference in the rear ends which I seriously doubt.

The E63 is lighter and has a much better c/d, game over E63 wins. Unless of course my man Juice63 is behind the wheel.

Cars are nearly identical
E is lighter but not by as much as I used to think,we weighed our cars once and it was roughly 175 lbs . I gotta weigh my car again now that I have a 6 lb battery.. LOL. GEARING is identical except 1st is longer in the CLS by a smidge.

4.37 to 4.38
2.86 in 2nd
1.92 in 3rd
1.37 in 4th
1.00 in 5th
.82 in 6th
.73 in 7th

Can someone explain to me what those #s mean and how the relate to performance, what would we do to make the torque available earlier?

The higher the number the shorter the gear. The longer 1st would actually be a disadvantage in the CLS. With those numbers you can plainly see that 6th and 7th are really two overdrives meant for fuel economy. While you can't mess with the actual gear ratios themselves unless you want to completely rebuild the tranny, you can change the rear end out, though I don't know anyone who makes an aftermarket rear end for these cars.
