Charcoal Filters in the in air intake - here's why

It is not to keep stuff from going into the engine.

It is to keep gasses from finding their way out. That actually makes sense.

As for the question of additional HP...

Vadim has written about these charcoal filter removals adding some horsepower to the 63 engines.

Yeah, some people didn't gain anything by removing them, but some even gained as much as 18whp

Does an '04 E55 have them, and if so, should they be removed?

I'm sure the C63 will have them..

I would love to a dyno on a C63.. put the debate of "down tuning" to rest.

Not psychological.......... Vadim has before and after dynos on Trez63's car (2007 CLS63) showing an additional 18+ whp. It's just that some people gained only 5 whp, some 10 whp, and some none at all

This particular sort of "mod" is going to be difficult to test on a dyno because you can't recreate the effects of air hitting your intakes while running a real 100 mph. Some facilities have better fans than others. Some don't have fans at all. To the extent this does provide a performance benefit, your measured gains in the last 1/8th of a 1/4 mile should show it better, imo.

In the case of the 63 the charcoal filters are right after the air filter before the MAF so is the goal to pressurize so that although gas could reach the MAF before the charcoal filter it won't since there isn't much of an outlet?

The goal of the charcoal filter is to keep gases escaping the engine when it is shut off. When the engine is shut off there are partially burned and unburned hydrocarbons in the cylinders that can move back up the intake manifold, past the MAF, past the air filter, and into the environment. The charcoal filter absorbs these gases.

The charcoal filters do NOTHING when the car is running except create resistance in the air flow.
