Renntech exhaust vids
My setup is as follows:
1. Secondary cats replaced with x-pipe
2. Resonator replaced with straight pipes.
3. Renntech exhaust
4. AFE air filter courtesy of Vadim.![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
AAA on La Cienega Blvd and Venice in LA did the work. As always, their work is top notch. I'll take pics of the undercarriage in a few days if I can get it on a lift.

The vids I posted really doesn't do the exhaust justice. MB prevents you from revving over 3000 rpm when the car is at a stand still or in neutral. Anyway, I went to Angeles Crest this weekend on some canyon runs with a few BMW buddies. One of the guys mounted a camera on my rearview window. I was in 2nd gear at 6000 rpm for most of the time. You can only imagine what it sounds like. A few times I upshifted to 3rd. When the vid is edited and posted I'll provide the link.

Renntech exhaust = mufflers. I'll get the Renntech headers sometime next year.
Actually, a lot of people remove the secondary cats and replace it with straight pipes.

Attack of the drone. ![mercy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/mecry.gif)
I'm experiencing droning between 1500 - 2000 rpm at low speeds in 1st, 2nd and 3rg gear. I have to be in Manual mode and keep the rpm > 2000 rpm to avoid the drone. On the way up from LA yesterday, I noticed in 7th @100 there is drone as well. So, @100, I keep it in 6th.
The Renntech exhaust (mufflers) doesn't have any resonance absorption properties and I don't have a resonator. The x-pipe helped reduce the droning but I'm going to probably put the resonator back on. I'm certain that the Renntech mufflers were meant to work with a resonator in place.

So When You Replace It With The X Pipe, It Becomes Deeper, But When You Replace It With Straight Pipe, Its Louder?
Im Wondering The Diffrence In Sound/ Performance When People Replace The (res) With X, And When They Replace It With A Straight Pipe...

The difference in what I did was replacing the secondary cats with an x-pipe and the resonator with straight pipes. Now, I'm considering putting back the resonator b/c of the droning I'm having.

Most people replace the resonator with either x-pipe or straight pipes. Replacing the resonator with straight pipes will make the stock 63 exhaust louder. Replacing the resonator with x-pipe will smooth out the uneven rumbling of the stock 63 exhaust, hence a deeper and more refined exhaust note.

I have not put the resonator back on yet. I'm looking at other alternatives like a Dynatech Vortex cone insert. Anyone have any opinions on this?
Rules--they're everywhere. When it comes to sound requirements, they can't be ignored. Don't take chances with sound control, or you may end up on the trailer. Vortex cone inserts from Dynatech easily install near the exit of the header collector or muffler outlet to reflect and dissipate sound energy, reducing the decibel level. Because the open area of the cones is greater than the area of the collector or exhaust pipe, there's no significant backpressure, so you reduce noise with little or no power loss. The cones are made from T-304 stainless steel and weigh less than 1/2 lb. each.

I did my exhaust in phases during last weekend. Three phases all together. The exhaust note and drone was different at each phase.
First phase was when the Renntech mufflers went on Thursday night right before I left San Jose for LA. At that time, my setup was secondary cats intact, resonator delete replaced with straight pipes and Renntech mufflers. It was basically the same exhaust note as what I had prior except the exhaust note was turned up LOUD, courtesy of the Renntech mufflers. As for resonance (drone), on my resonance scale (my ears) of 1 - 10, where 1 is quiet and 10 where you can't even hear the radio, I'd give it a 7.
The second phase was Friday morning when the x-pipe was installed by AAA. They removed the secondary cats and the straight pipes. It was two pieces. In place was a custom one piece x-pipe that ran back to the axle and connected to the Renntech mufflers. As soon as I started the car up, the exhaust tone was deep and smoother with less rumbling. More pleasing to my ears and exactly what I was looking for. The resonance from a 1 - 10 scale = 5.
The third phase was Friday afternoon when I stopped by VRP in Costa Mesa to pick up the AFE high flow air filters. I didn't get a chance to put them on until Friday evening. Afterwards, driving around later that night I noticed the exhaust note became deeper and an unexpected surprise was the resonance was reduced. On a scale of 1 - 10 = 4. I didn't expect the AFE air filters to reduce the resonance but it did.![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Now, to reduce the resonance to 1 or 2 on the scale, I'm probably going to put the stock resonator back on, but I want to try out the Dynatech Vortex cone insert first, that is if they have the right size cone.
