In our race car tranny which is a sequential, the gear you are shifting into is also preselected. Occasionally you have a part fail and it shifts into 2 gears at once and blows the gear cogs to bits...it is pretty spectacular.
I wonder what happens when an M3 shifts into reverse and 5th at the same time on the highway at 75MPH. Should be interesting!
Likely not possible they way they should have designed it but I bet it can lock two successive gears against each other with a clutch failure which would also product interesting results. However, kudos to BMW for bringing race car technology to the street. I want one of these puppies in the next M5!

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
As regards the new transmission, saty away from version 1.0. After that, I'm sure it'll be a great success. Not sure how good it will be at skiping gears though seeing as one clutch does even and the other odd. It will be smoother than SMG and open up the car to a wider audience but hard drivers will likely miss the sense of connectivity and brutal WOT shifts.

M division generally begin there testing four years before release (E60 V10, E92 V8) so I'm not doubting what you heard. Worth bearing in mind that neither the E39 M5 or E46 M3 had their engines changed mid-lifecycle and the curious tactic of doing so seems to be AMG's suit. As regards FI in a M, I'd be sad to see it employed as there is never quite the exqusite connection to the revs while a jump to say 600bhp is unecessary (though it certainly won't stop me getting one).
