That is a tragedy and I feel for the families.
The father that allowed the M5 in to the hands of a teenager, just not a wise move. (aren't we lucky to survive our youth)
My river house is not far from the scene and share my exterminator with Travolta and other residents at Jumbolair, I am sure he will have some more inside poop on this, as the access and party sound like a Jumbolair residence.

Exactly, I would never let a kid of mine have such a car at that age.

Doing some really rought math. The thing few 200 feet. The berm was 85 feet high and the car hit 15' off the ground. So.. assuming a flat tragectory off the berm, about 1.4 seconds to drop the 70 feet. that works out to around 105 MPH average speed once it left the runway.

So.. it hit the tree at around 120 MPH (taking into account loss of velocity, addition of gravitational acceleration). Maybe 120 MPH into a tree. That's gonna hurt. So far I've not seen any speed estimates but I'm thinking they were near the 155 governed speed when the panic set in and he hit the brakes.

That's really add for the families and his passengers. They will never have the chance to learn from the bad decisions that let up to the crash.

We had a 27 year old Gym member & his 23 year old GF take a Z06 into a tree going 140 Mph in the rain down here in SW FL about 5 months ago. The car split in half and burst into flames cooking his long-time girlfriend right in the car as he was ejected. He landed no where near the impact point and I now swear no matter what I will never buy a vette. He was the type to ride a wheelie @ 100 Mph for a mile on the highway, so restraint was a unknown to him.

Bottom line is giving young people 500 HP cars is basically offering them a easier way to die. I really think that it should be illegal for people under 25 to drive high horsepower cars, much like the insurance industries punishment with high premiums and the rental car companies basically banning underage renting. Kids do not need to be behind the wheel of a multi-ton rocket. You might as well be giving them a tank with live shells and see what damage they can do now, lord knows there will be problems.

P.S. I had a Dodge Viper for 2 years when it first came out in the early 90's, I was living on Marco Island in FL. He saw my new dodge stealth R/T and asked me if I would like a sports car that really goes fast, I said sure what do you have. He said I can get us a pair of Vipers and I was like man your crazy, those things are impossible to get. He told me he has a way and at the time I was ~23 years old and took him up on it. It took them 3 hours to get my red w/ grey interior off the truck, no air, plastic windows, a impossible to work top that never clicked in easy and a terrible radio. I almost killed myself 3 times w/ that car but after figuring out rain made the car go sideways and all puddles meant disaster, I learned to play it cool and drive it well. I found out later that my neighbor was in charge of chrysler at the time, I really had no idea. Stupidly I lost his number but he was always the guy that nearly killed me with a car, god bless him.

I still shudder at the images of that poor CA girl with her head split open when her Porsche rammed a toll booth. Those images are forever etched onto my retinas I'm afraid...

Unnecessary, that's what it is. Please if any of you have kids, teach them respect behind the wheel. If you let them drive your car, watch them carefully. Teach them that these vehicles, all vehicles are not toys, and that they command respect. This is way to common to read....My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all involved.

small disclaimer:
My avitar pic is me on a race track in a controlled environment.

RIP to all those guys...Its crazy when you read the threads on the M5 forum and you see everyone warning him to chill out just days ago! No way an 18 year old should be driving that car.. I used to top out my VW diesel at 80mph at 18yrs old and was so pissed why my dad had given me a diesel.. Its not till you have kids of your own that you understand why...

The story is definitely making its way around the internet. So sad. 5 lives gone, remaining family never the same.

Just to put some timescale on this, AmericanM5 joined the M5board in January 22nd and his last post was at 9 pm the night of the crash

So sad....

Some chilling last words from the driver....

That is horrible. I've read through some of those threads and it is just...surreal.

I must say, I don't agree that legislation should dictate who at what age can buy what (wanna further kill our constitution?), but I absolutely agree the age for drivers should be 21 and the requirements for gaining a license are much more expensive and stringent (like in Europe).

it so unreal to think that he is gone and he took 4 people with him. It makes me think back to sh*t i did when i was younger especially with people in the car. It is one thing to take your own life, taking someone else's...
