With Mobile 1 admitting to changing their recipe, it probably wouldn't hurt to do more research and see what one finds.

Oh geeze....
Just when I though I had a handle on it, the game has changed....

Post #15 is from a guy named Steve Weiner - who is *VERY* respected in the Porsche comm. for his knowledge....
Looks like he's now saying avoid ALL new Mobil 1 oils and moved to Brad-Penn...

The newer Mobil1 products suck. And it is untrue that ALL oils have reduced phosphorus, only us-produced oils. You can still buy Penrite or whatever, with the phosphorus still in it.
Personally, I'd rather replace a cat every 70k miles and have an engine that could last 180k miles, than the other way around.

Similar thread over on Rennlist some time back in the 993 section (Porsche forum).
Yes all oils have had the phos. content reduced (IIRC it's now SM rated oil but was SL??).. anyway, the 993 crowd can be a little nuts about oil, as it's not just the lubricant, but also the cooling mechanism for our older engines.
So, the long and the short of it (and I'll post the link if I can find it) was that Mobil 1 was still good, but you *might* want to add a GM sourced cam and lifter lube (4oz bottle) with each oil change to bump the ZDDP level up a bit and assist the wear additivies.
Off to search for that thread now...
Honestly though... Oil selection is like women... one mans ugly is anothers beauty..

And NO, Mobil 1 is still a great option out of ALL US made/sold oils my friend.

Ah, you night want to check on that info, if it is sold in the US, it has to meet our lovely goverment regulations. I do agree totaly with engine over the cat option. If mine ever clog, its straight pipe for me baby.

Also, anyone have anything else to say about adding cam & lifter lube to your crankcase, to compensate for the government-mandated phosphorus reduction, like someone suggested?
Is that a good idea? If so, what product to use?

This thread is starting to suck. Granted Mobil 1 had to reduce the phos in the oil but nobody can say what effect that really has on wear and tear. Also, why would MB put 0w-40 in AMGs if 15w-50 is better per the table above?

I just had car serviced. They used elf. Average temp now 90. Used to be around 80. Don’t know oil used viscosity. Could change in viscosity translate to higher running temp???

ILSAC GF-4 is the specification that states phosphorus levels for the oil must be less than 800 ppm. ISLAC stands for International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee, and GF-4 is an industry standard, not a federal standard. Mobil1 0W-40 has a phosphorus level of 1000 PPM and therefore does not meet the GF-4 standard. 0W-40 is not scheduled to have any change made in the formulation. Mobil1 5W-40 is the product that was scheduled to be reformulated in early 2008. This is according to a Mobil1 doc that’s less than 6 months old.

Thanks for the info, do you recommend one of these?

My last service record was 0-w40 Mobile 1 - Brisbane, Australia.(sub-tropical)
I would be concerned about using a 15-wXX anywhere it gets cold (near freezing). The high viscosity at low temperatures will mean increased wear at start up as the oil is thicker and less lubricious.

Car was serviced right on schedule as per computer countdown. I believe ELF is a good brand. It is not that well known / popular in Australia however I have done some research since I became aware it was put in my car (as you do) and it is used in Renault F1 etc etc as well as most GP bike teams. My car says to only use Dunlop tires or Conti's and most posters have strayed from this recommendation. Still I just can't help but think......"oils aint oils"

Did a MB dealer use Elf? If not why did you go for it? Just interested.

I have an 03 which is out of warranty. I take it to West Star Autos for service. guy there is ex service manager at Marshall Motors, which is one of Sydney’s biggest MB dealerships. He is a great guy who knows the product inside out. I did not tell him which oil to use but after research I am not fussed at all that I am on Elf. Where you at in Brissy. I’m on the Gold Coast next week. We should hook up.

I should note I am talking about an M120, which is a huge block...I am sure there is room to spare for the additional fluid level...so I mainly wondering if I will have issues with the lifter lube properly mixing in with the already run-in Mobil1...
