Will the ram air scoops work on a w211 e55? And, how much?

To me it seems odd that the scoops would add power when the car is sitting stationary on a dyno. I would think that you would have to be moving to realize any significant gains. I know that you've got fans going, but I wouldn't think that they could replicate real world airflow. Regardless, they look good and should work on the street.

I did something very similiar with my 55, although not nearly as high tech. I took a dremel to the inlet housings right in front of the radiator and opened them up all the way. By doing this you end up losing over 5 square inches of obstruction between both sides. Now I just need to get some python tubes to take full advantage.....

Is water an issue with this set-up...I drive my 63 everyday rain, snow etc.

I did the same modification to my intake as supre55 and have had no problems that I'm aware of. Mine's been like this for probably at least 40k miles now and the only difference is that I find larger insects in fewer pieces in the filter boxes and filters. My car is a DD and unfortunately is frequently driven in rainy conditions.

If you just remove the vent like piece that restricts airflow it should be about the same.

Is this the balck plastic piece that can be bent out of the way? WAs told , by dealer nonetheless, that it prevents water and large objects from entering the intake.

Yes that is the part. Pretty much thats what it is for. I havent done it so cant give much feedback. Just an observation to the ram air concept.

Well that is what the air filter is for.

I removed those front pieces on my E55 years ago, no problems rain, hail or shine.

I'm sceptical that there is any hp gain, especially on a dyno. How can there be any ram effect without the 'ram' part?

Sorry forgot the photos.
I packed high temp. insulation foam around the inlet to 'force' air into the intake or through the radiator.

Cool Mod but I agree there will be a better gain when the car is in motion. Your car likely dyno's slightly lower due to thos 20" rims.

I like it , I think it will help alot on the track!

An attempt was made on the E55 without much luck due to spacing. I'm not sure if scoops for the E55 will be revisited in the future.

Agreed. I was told the same thing. It'll be very noticeable during real world application.

I don't think so, but I'll have to ask to be certain that water won't be a problem.

10 rwhp. Found out it today that it made more power but for some reason after a dyno it threw some error codes. It has been in dyno mode since Saturday. Can anyone help out?

Tell me about it! I saw the dyno sheets that Vadim posted with 20" wheels and then the stock wheels on a CLS 63? I think the delta was 20rwhp.

I'm sure you will break into the 11's with these scoops.

Was your ECU disconnected at all during the dyno session?

I have the mod on my M6... clearly the gains are tangible and proveable with that car. Check out the hundreds of posts at M5Board. Eloy at RPI has a fan that mimicks 70 mph driving. My car gained 15 hp and he has countless dynos to prove it with the S85 engine- as for the 63 that is another story.

Everything was the same as when I left the tuning shop Saturday. This morning, Eloy (operator/owner) got in my car, let it get up to temperature for I think 20 minutes, started a dyno run, and at the end of the run went to get a phone call. Came back to the car and noticed the CEL was on. Confirmed with him that dyno mode was still on.


It's making power on the 63 engine too!
