2004 E55 AMG
I lost against an SRT/4..are you kidding?
Had 4 people in AMG going to dinner..guy in a SRT/4 steps up next to me on the highway making the motions..I put hammer down..he freakin' pulls away from me..are you kidding me?
My passengers are telling me to floor it..I AM!!!
One thing that happenned strange..when I floored it the tranny didn't downshift..stayed in gear. Don't know why. Had it in "S" mode too.
By the time I thought to downshift manually he was way up there and in traffic.
I was embarrassed. Was he that fast or did I do something wrong? Looked like a stock srtr/4 on the outside.

You had at least an extra 500lbs in your car (could be 1000lbs if 4 big guys). That's a serious headstart to the SRT4, esp if he caught you in the worng gear.
It could also be the intercooler pump!

SRT4s are known to be quick little cars. Many are modded and it doesn't take much to add power to them. 285hp/265tq, 6-speed manual stock form for $22k. IIRC, Mopar offered factory engine upgrades for the Neon SRT4. Not sure about the new Caliber SRT4.
Also, it only weights 2880 lbs!

This just goes to further prove my point that there are lots of cars out there in varuios states of tune that can suprise you. Those SRT/4's are light and can be modded for not a lot of money, low 12 second E/T's are pretty easy to acheive.

+1. Tranny definitely should have downshifted, so something to investigate and correct.
That said, it's straight-forward to mod a SRT4 into a 10 second 1/4 mile car that would light up any stock E55 off the line and up to 125 MPH or so.
The fact that he came trolling for you also suggests to me that he had a modded car. He might even be bragging right now on an SRT4 kill forum somewhere in cyberspace.

car not dropping a gear is something wrong..specially on the freeway.
also. .. don't bother racing with people in your car.. very dangerous and your car will not perform the best.
next time just nod and give him a thumbs up and tell him "next time when I'm alone in the car"

Funny you mention that. Between 40-60 one out of a dozen times mine won't downshift. Had it in and checked, everything including pump came back clean...frustrating.

All cars that come stock with turbo's can be made fast, and the performance parts are cheap. The Evo's Sti's, and SRT-4's can be very fast with minor upgrades, but at the end of the day they are still driving a modded economy car.

I have an '06 SL65 and an '07 STi, both tuned. I haven't had them side by side because I really don't care, but the 65 will likely pull on the straights (but not by much), then get raped in the turns.
I love my modded economy car...

The only way downshifting is improved around town is with a Sprint Booster. I had it with both of my cars and you never have a delay.

Try to reset your tranny adaptation... I think you've been driving like granny for a while so the car got lazy. Not downshifting AT ALL never happened to me... but significant delay before the car downshifted did happen to me. After resetting the tranny adaptation, all is good again

not definitely sure if it is a problem yet. Did you try pushing it right after?
Reason I am asking is I have always notice that I will have to do a initial jump or WOT thrust to "wake" the car up. If not, it will not down shift completely in S mode. Once awoke it downshift properly and is way faster. If this is not possible, I would downshift myself to make sure it is in gear already.
I would try to do a couple of WOT test. The first one to wake it up. If the second and third run do not drop the gear properly then you have a problem. You can also do the "sneaky reset" first since this is the root cause, the adaptive learning our car has.
The sprintbooster actually does not fix this problem. It make it appear to fix it for slightly faster daily driving but for straight WOT, SB doesn't fix this.
Hope it's as simple as this and that you were just not prepared

2004 E55 AMG
He did this to me on the highway, about 30 secionds after I merged onto highway and passed traffic quickly onto the speed lane. 4 guys, probably 1000lbs. So 5000lb amg against 3000lb srt..sounds like its doable if he's got some go fast parts. And he did get the jump on me, but I couldn' catch up..in fact I was losing ground. The engine felt 'dead', like my old BMW in cruise mode..sometimes would stay in gear and lug along when mashing the pedal. Thought an AMG would jump on the throttle. This car is new to me about two weeks. 2004 with 30k. Normally this car has been brutal fast. very impressed.
Read post about tranny learned code reset...when I do it I lose the seat and dash settings, not tranny. Maybe I am on wrong key setting..I put it on the step just before start, yes? and then press pedal to floor for 5 seconds. Turning off key before releasing pedal?

As others have commented, the intercooler pump doesn't throw a code when its starting to fail. When mine started to fail I took it to the dealer who declined to replace it. I then bought an OBD2 data logger, ran the car full throttle at the track, and logged IAT temps above spec. Then the dealer replaced the pump under warranty.
