I raced a M6 tonight with my E55!

I got to race a 2006 M6 with my 2004 E55 AMG tonight. We did 3 races 1 from 0 and 2 highway rolls. First race we started at 0 at a stop light, once the light hit green we went at to 110, my E55 jumped out in front all the way to 110 with him trailing about 2-3 car lengths but I got a very minor jump. Then we went on the highway and punched it at 30mph till 150 and I lost by about 4-5 car lengths. The final race we started at 70mph and and he beat me by a good 8-9 car lengths but every race he used the paddle shifters and I never did. Every roll he was getting the jump on me cauz when i punched it on S mode it took time to downshift and take off. Afterward he let me drive the M6 and i loved every second of it. It was my first actual race since getting the car and it was FUN. Thought I'd share my racing experience with the M6 today.

Nice m6s are nuts from a roll. Even the 911 turbo barely pulls on it in triple digits.

You need good mods on an E/SL55 car to hang with a stock M5/M6 from a roll. Above 100mph they fly. However, you'll always kill them from a dig. Nice runs

not using the peddle shifters or the gear leaver makes a huge difference.
Learn from this and next time u decide to race always go down to 2nd gear, or third depending on your speed. After that you do not need to shift the car will do it by its self

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
So how much of the differential from a roll is due to gearing and how much to heat soak?

Gotta love the gearing on that M....

Like he said, get in the proper gear. You can hold down the left steering wheel shifter button and it will automatically go into the lowest gear possible for you. Would have made a big difference on the rolls....although you still would have lost with a stock E55.

He took me for a ride in it ont he highway and he was doing 160mph cutting thru traffic. That M6 after 100mph was ridiculous. We are going to mess around this sunday coming again. I'm going to try to get it on camera this time.

That's a really good question and I'd really like to know. I think there's more and more research going on regarding the issue of heatsoak and how to combat it, as well as how it affects the car's performance over time and through multiple gears.

I will tell you that the gearing advantage makes a huge difference. If you know how to push your SMGIII you're going to be tough to catch on the highway.

The races sound about right, you will get him out of the hole and it will take sometime for the 6 to catch up. But from a roll they really shine and its the gearing plus the lack of drivetrain loss up top that the slushboxes suffer from. I have always felt my M6 was vulnerable down low to any AMG from a dig- thats why I have a 997TT

I just don't get when people are racing - and know "its on" they leave it in "Drive" and not have it in the right gear "ready" and wait for the car to downshift, especially against a fast car...

Bone stock M6's generally trap anywhere between 116 mph to 122 mph.
Bone stock E55's generally trap anywhere between 113 mph to 117 mph.
Most of the car mags found that the best times for the E55 are when it shifted for itself.
When the M6 gets the new DCT trans it will shift much smoother (not a fan of the SMG) and perhaps be even faster.

Is the adrenaline of the moment. There are countless screw ups at the track also.

this is true if you are referring to M mode, how ever S mode while Using the peddle shifters, or the gear leaver (tiptronic) to be in the right gear is the best way period. In S mode the car will shift its self at red line.

just cruising and mashing the peddle will not give you the same results at all

Everything I've read says it will keep the SMG until they change models in like 4years. I hated SMG on the M3 but the third version that the M6 has is great

I heard the SMG sucks. As for the gear selecting from a roll I would keep it in S mode and just hold the shifter over to the left for a few seconds and that selects the lowest gear possible for your speed. Then do the 3 honks and just keep it floored. Good runs by the way! I still need a ride in an M6.... any takers?

I had SMG II on my E46 M3 and it did suck- well relatively speaking but the SMG on my M6 is great. The shifts in S6 are crazy fast!!

The car is only fast if you use paddles from a roll, use kickdown and you will loose horribly. Why dont you just do the downshifting manually in s mode before you launch and then let her change by herself??

If I start in manual the car will shift on it's own even if I dont hit the + button?

Best part is that you can hear the tranny just SLAMMING into gear in S6, oh the sweet sound, the chirp of the tires as they struggle to cope with what you've just done to the laws of physics.

no, in manual mode it will not shift for u. in sport mode, if u downshift w/ the paddles it will shift for u when u reach redline.
